Band 7 Occupational Therapist for Medical Rehabilitation and FrailtyOur Medical Rehabilitation and Frailty team is seeking an experienced Clinician to lead our Occupational Therapists in Acute Medicine, and to develop a more integrated approach to hospital discharge in line with latest national initiatives. The knowledge and skills of Occupational Therapists are key in supporting patients living with frailty and complex needs, and in assisting them in recovering from acute illness and enabling them to return 'home first'. We are ambitiously seeking to take this one step further by supporting this transition home through agile and innovative pathways, facilitating improved outcomes in conjunction with our community colleagues.
As the Band 7 Occupational Therapist, you will provide advanced clinical skills in the assessment and management of patients with complex health and social needs, relating these to the persons occupational therapy needs on the ward and at home. This will include managing your own caseload as well as supporting other team members, and providing specialist advice to the MDT for patients not directly under your care.
Main duties of the jobTo be responsible for the day to day running of the medical rehabilitation Occupational Therapy service ensuring that all medical rehabilitation patients are given appropriate and effective Occupational Therapy treatment across the Acute Assessment Unit, medical wards and the outlying patients on other wards. To work as an autonomous practitioner in providing Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment to own designated caseload of patients and to maintain up to date Occupational Therapy records. To use evidence based principles/current best practice and specialist skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions and to ensure that all members of your team do likewise. To participate in CPD, appraisal and other developmental activities and encourage all members of your team to do likewise. To be responsible for the supervision, teaching and day to day line management of more junior staff, assistants and students on placement. To have the opportunity to participate in, or lead, a team based or department based research project.
To participate in on call and weekend working rotas.

To provide a high standard of assessment and treatment to all medical rehabilitation and to complex patients with multiple co-existing pathologies.
PROFESSIONALTo comply with the RCOT Occupational Therapy code of professional conduct at all times. To maintain up-to-date CPD profile in line with current evidence. To be jointly responsible, with Band 7 Physiotherapist for the organisation of the medical rehabilitation team in-service training programme and demonstrate good presentation skills in the delivery of medical rehabilitation teaching sessions and tutorials. To promote the use of evidence based practice during the teaching and supervision of more junior staff.
ORGANISATIONALTo be responsible for providing an efficient and effective medical rehabilitation Occupational Therapy service, by demonstrating good leadership, organisational, time management and prioritisation skills. To screen, manage and prioritise own workload, and that of your team, and appropriately balance clinical and other demands to ensure all service needs are met. To ensure team members attend multidisciplinary meetings where they provide and record patient progress/discharge planning information. To maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in line with departmental, professional and legal standards and ensure that all members of the medical rehabilitation team do likewise.
EFFORTTo carry out assessment and treatment using manual and therapeutic handling techniques which require moderate to high physical effort and intense concentration and vigilance for the vast majority of each working day. To comply with the trust manual handling policy at all times. To travel between sites and patients homes as required using own, hospital or public transport and to take responsibility for the safety of patients, therapists and assistants while on these visits.
Person SpecificationEDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONSEssential- Msc, BSc or Diploma in Occupational Therapy
- HCPC registration
- Evidence of CPD and relevant post graduate courses
Desirable- BOAT/RCOT membership
- Relevant post graduate qualifications
- Leadership and/or management training
EXPERIENCEEssential- Evidence of experience working as an autonomous practitioner at Band 6 level in an acute physical hospital setting managing patients with orthopaedics, general medical, neurology, rehabilitation and/or general surgery conditions in the UK or equivalent system
- Evidence of active participation in and delivery in-service training programmes
- Evidence of appraisal, clinical and professional supervision and teaching of qualified therapy staff, therapy assistants, students and other members of the MDT
- Experience of working in the NHS in a specialist Older Adults service
Desirable- Experience of taking on leadership responsibilities within a healthcare setting
