North Middlesex University Hospital is one of the Royal Free Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts in Enfield North London serving the diverse communities of Enfield, Haringey and beyond.

Our General Ultrasound scan department at North Mid is part of Radiology and operates a comprehensive 7-day service with 5 on-site Ultrasound scanning rooms.

We have 7 Obstetrics and 2 Gynaecology Ultrasound scan rooms with obstetric scan department operational from Monday to Saturday.

The Ultrasound department also operates limited Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) sessions twice a week.

The service is run by a friendly team of 16 sonographers who rotate in General, Obstetrics, Gynaecology and lithotripsy working alongside other multidisciplinary professionals to deliver outstanding care for our patients.

We are looking for an agile, enthusiastic, competent sonographer in general, Gynaecology and Obstetric Ultrasound scanning with independent report writing skills to join the team and contribute to continuous improvement and high-quality service delivery.

The successful candidate would be expected to participate in weekend and evening rota; however, a degree of flexibility is possible with many of our Sonographers working compressed hours to allow a 3 or 4 day working week.

Main duties of the job

1. To demonstrate skills in a wide range of obstetric and general ultrasound examinations, including transvaginal scanning.
2. To maintain professional occupational standards of technical skill and legally take responsibility to ensure a high standard of clinical care.
3. To interpret and analyse findings in accordance with agreed protocols.
4. To explain the abnormal ultrasound findings to obstetric patients and make appropriate referrals to the Clinicians.
5. To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients in working area, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
6. To independently provide a diagnostic report on all examinations.
7. To be able to appropriately communicate highly complex, sensitive or contentious information about scan findings to patients and their family.
8. Demonstrate excellence in one or more sub-specialities, when required.
9. To participate in the Quality Assurance Programme in accordance with the policies of the department including equipment care and maintenance.
10. To have a flexible approach towards working hours in order to address service needs and maximise efficient use of equipment.

Job responsibilities

1. The post holder will have attained the Obstetric and Gynaecology, Abdominal modules in Medical Ultrasound, and certification of competency for Nuchal Translucency scanning.
2. The post holder must demonstrate a high level of ultrasound scanning skills and will work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.
3. You will have autonomous responsibility for performing and reporting a wide range of ultrasound examinations.
4. You will be expected to be able to work independently under pressure, but your support network will be as part of the ultrasound team.
5. You will be required to work to a high standard in keeping with departmental guidelines and protocols with regard to patient care, and expected to participate in CPD and clinical audit.
6. A Postgraduate qualification in ultrasound is required and you must be registered with the Health Professions Council or equivalent.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

• Post graduate Diploma in Ultrasound or equivalent qualification
• HCPC registration
• Experience of working in NHS
• Nuchal Translucence FMF certification

Experience

• Experience of working clinically in Radiology, Obstetrics and/or Gynaecology
• Experience in teaching, assessing and presentations
• Participated in clinical audit or quality assurance program
• Participated in research and publication

Knowledge and Awareness

• Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and pathology relevant to Ultrasound imaging
• Awareness of statutory regulations related to radiology and maternity
• Understanding 2ww, 6ww and 18 ww RTT pathways as part of 62day standard
• Knowledge of FASP screening standards

Skills and abilities

• Excellent interpersonal, communication and motivational skills.
• Ability to use IT systems and programmes to a high level including RIS, PACS, word, excel.
• Previous use of Soliton RIS, Medway, and Sectra PACS, Datix, viewpoint.
• Able to show reflection and subsequent improvement in techniques when involved in incidents.
