Band 6 Specialist Occupational Therapist - Neuro rehab

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated occupational therapist with an interest in further developing their neurological skills to join the Community Neurological Condition Management Team (CNCMT). This is a fixed term role to support an existing member of the team on a yearlong career break.

The team is highly regarded locally and within the wider neurological community and provides a range of specialist neurological outpatient (including groups) and community services primarily to Barnet residents.

This position presents an excellent opportunity to further develop your clinical, service development and supervisory skills. You will also be joining an innovative and dedicated multidisciplinary team in supporting individuals with a range of neurological conditions who present with complex needs.

The successful candidate is required to demonstrate the Trust values, the responsibilities of the job description, and person specification. You should have proven experience of working as an occupational therapist and the desire and passion to develop skills within neuro rehabilitation and long-term condition management.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role include:

  1. To provide a specialist Occupational therapy (OT) service to adults in the borough of Barnet with a range of neurological conditions based within the Community Neurological Conditions Management Team (CNCMT) at the Royal Free Neurological Rehabilitation Centre (NRC).
  2. To assess and treat own caseload of patients who may have acute, chronic and/or complex neurological dysfunction and maintain appropriate patient records and statistics.
  3. Responsible for acting as a case co-ordinator/keyworker for allocated patients including organising and undertaking reviews for patients with progressive neurological conditions.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to perform manual handling tasks such as the hoisting and/or transfer of patients, fitting and delivery of ADL equipment, as well as assessment of complex seating and postural management aids.
  5. Support with the supervision of more junior members of the team including students and rehab assistants as well as being involved in teaching programmes for the OTs and the MDT.
  6. Assist in operational issues related to their area of work.
  7. Complete evidence-based projects and research including departmental audit and service developments with support from the band 7 OT.

Job responsibilities

  1. Carry out complex standardised and non-standardised OT assessments of functional ability, cognition, home situation and psychosocial issues, liaising with senior OT staff as required for highly complex patients.
  2. Provides advanced recommendations/advice regarding OT management of each patient according to the individual needs of the patient.
  3. Monitors, reviews and modifies treatment plans/goals to measure progress and ensure effective outcomes e.g. planning patient discharges/referral to specialist rehabilitation settings.
  4. Prioritises own patient caseload and develops individualised treatment interventions within resource constraints under supervision from senior therapists.
  5. Promotes the role of occupational therapy at a variety of meetings, in particular promoting close liaison with other health professionals, private and voluntary organisations.
  6. Responsible for the management, transport and fitting of specialised equipment in patients community setting as required, e.g. toileting and bathing equipment, potentially in restricted spaces.
  7. Discusses and makes recommendations to the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) with regard to complex patient management.
  8. Carries a full patient caseload varied in number dependent upon the complexity of the patients and adhering to prioritisation policies.
  9. Assists in ensuring less experienced staff apply relevant aspects of national clinical guidelines and legislation, which relate to health and social care.
  10. Plans and allocates work to therapy assistant staff.

Education & professional Qualifications

  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • HPC Registration in OT

Experience

  • Post-graduate work experience as an Occupational Therapist, including working with patients in the field of neurology.
  • Experience of working in an inpatient physical/Neuro setting.
  • Experience of working in an acute setting including working with an MDT.
  • Experience of working in a community setting.
  • Experience of Mental Capacity Assessment and best interest decisions.
  • Previous experience of working as a Band 6 Occupational Therapist.
  • Experience of supervision/student education.

Skills and aptitudes

  • Evidence of a clear understanding of the role of the Occupational Therapist in a community setting.
  • Evidence of sound and clear understanding of Occupational Therapy core skills.
  • Evidence of sound clinical knowledge and well-established assessment and treatment skills.
  • Evidence of ability to manage a full clinical caseload and prioritise effectively.
  • Evidence of ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance.
  • Evidence of an understanding of the skills required to be an effective team member.
  • Evidence of an understanding of the skills required to ensure effective communication.
  • Evidence of an understanding of multidisciplinary issues and knowledge of the skills required to work efficiently and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Professional fluency in written and oral English.
  • Ability to carry out manual handling practices.
