Moorfields Eye Hospital are searching for an enthusiastic Pharmacist to join their highly skilled and motivated team.

It provides state-of-the-art operating facilities run by some of the UK’s leading ophthalmology surgeons, providing operative services including laser treatment, vision correction, cosmetic treatment, and various other corrective treatment for a range of eye conditions.

Based in the Private Patients Pharmacy dispensary, the post holder will assist the Specialist Pharmacist and the Moorfields Private Pharmacy Operations & Development Manager in the provision of comprehensive, patient-focused clinical pharmacy service to the Private Patients division of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The current operational hours of the pharmacy are 09:00 to 20:00 Monday to Friday.

The post holder will support the delivery of this key service through adopting a coordinated approach to rotational shifts. The service may expand in the future and include pharmacy service provision on Saturdays and/or weekdays evening, which the post holder will be involved with. The post holder will support the main clinical areas within the Trust where Private Practice is undertaken. Although the post holder will be based within the Private Pharmacy at our City Road site, he/she will spend a portion of their time working in a variety of areas/locations within London; in accordance with the requirements of the service.

Duties:

1. To review outpatient/inpatient/discharge prescriptions and drug charts; to dispense and check medicines to patients; to provide advice to patients on doses, possible side effects; to undertake risk management and ensure that a comprehensive dispensing service is provided within the restraints of available resources and present legislation under the: Medicines Act, Department of Health regulations, Medicines Management standards, General Pharmaceutical Council regulations and Royal Pharmaceutical Society professional guidance and code of practice.
2. To provide professional and legal supervision to Private Patient (PP) pharmacy support staff (pharmacy technician and/or assistant) as allocated under the ‘responsible pharmacist’ requirements. This includes the dispensing and checking of dispensed medicines (including controlled drugs) for in-patient and out-patient use and clinical screening of prescription charts from wards.
3. To comply with the legal and other requirements related to the order, purchase, supply, use, safe custody and destruction of drugs within PP and in all other areas of the hospital.
4. To maintain and develop dispensary services and to ensure a rapid and cost effective pharmaceutical service, within the available resources.
5. To participate in medicines reconciliation at the Francis Cumberlege Wing and medicines management initiative for all clinical areas within Moorfields Private.
6. To ensure the provision of comprehensive pharmaceutical care of patients, develop and implement clinical pharmacy services for the pre-admission assessment, admission and discharge of patients by working closely with the PP Specialist Pharmacist.
7. To be responsible for regular stock and controlled drug checks in PP pharmacy and/or other private clinical areas and to ensure that the storage and record keeping requirements for controlled drugs and “named patient” drugs are being adhered to.
8. Liaising with the medical and nursing staff, to regularly review stock lists according to local requirements, order and receive medicines from wholesalers and different pharmacy stockholdings.
9. To participate in the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
10. To participate in the education and training of other health care workers as appropriate. To supervise and train junior pharmacy staff, pre-registration pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, trainee technicians and summer vacation students as appropriate.
11. To participate in the development and implementation of performance indicators for the service.
12. To provide advice and information on the safe and effective use of medicines to a multidisciplinary team.
13. To provide advice and counselling to patients on the safe and effective use of medicines.
14. To participate in practice research and undertake clinical and service audits as appropriate.
15. To generate invoices and manage invoice queries for outpatient and/or discharge prescriptions using Compucare system.
16. To collect money for invoices and to reconcile the cash register money collection at the end of the day.
17. Be responsible for general security of drugs and money in the PP Pharmacy.

Requirements

• Pharmacy Degree. MPharm or equivalent
• Must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical council Pharmacist register (Active registration)
• Supervised pharmacy experience
• 1 year pre-registration training
