Job summary

Do you have the desire to work in Critical Care and Surgical setting?

We seek a passionate Occupational Therapist who can support the continued provision of high quality, patient centred therapy service across our Regional Vascular Surgery Centre at Heartlands Hospital and Critical Care units.

The surgical wards cover Vascular, Colorectal, urology, ENT and General Surgery.

The Critical Care units across Heartlands and Good Hope Hospital sites support acutely unwell patients with Medical, Surgical, Respiratory and Neurological conditions.

We are currently developing a Surgical Pathway for patients from critical care to discharge. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about service development and understands the impact of Occupational therapy interventions on a patient's quality of life.

You will be provided with regular supervision, appraisal and clinical development and opportunities for both internal and external CPD in both Surgery and Critical Care settings.

You will be expected to contribute to a seven day working and Bank Holiday service within therapies.

Main duties of the job:

  1. To perform specialist functional assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions.
  2. To hold responsibility for assessing patients quickly when referred, working without direct supervision.
  3. To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner and maintain associated records.
  4. To assist with supervision, education and coordination of generic therapy assistants, therapy technical instructors and junior therapists.
  5. Undertake evidence-based audit and research projects to further own and team's clinical practice.
  6. Make recommendations to clinical lead/manager of service for changes to practice by the team.
  7. May lead the implementation of specific changes to practice or contribute to service protocols.

You will have specific skills in specialist seating & positioning, with a broad understanding of the cognitive impact on patients, applying specialist assessment skills as required. Training and development opportunities will be available.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential:

  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • Registered with HCPC
  • Evidence of CPD including recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality
  • Evidence of leadership training
  • Good standard of general education including GCSE English and maths grade C or above
  • A Levels or equivalent qualification

Experience Essential:

  • Demonstrates clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients with complex needs in this speciality, usually around 12 months, including experience in discharge planning.
  • Evidence of team/service development
  • A specialist knowledge across a range of OT treatments, routine and non-routine, requiring expertise within the field of occupational therapy
  • An ability to cope with a range of complex options, find solutions, analyse, compare and decide on appropriate course of action.
  • Understanding of current legislation and application to OT

Additional Criteria Essential:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including an ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive and contentious information.
  • An ability to prioritise and organise own workload and demonstrate enthusiasm for the specialty.
  • Demonstrate a professional attitude and an ability to work as part of an inter-disciplinary team.
  • An ability to cope with moving/manoeuvring patients/equipment on a daily basis.
  • An ability to cope with exposure to distressing/emotional situations.
  • Demonstrate an interest in developing expertise within the relevant team.
  • Able to contribute to weekend service.
  • Ability to work across site and service.
