We are offering a fantastic opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist full time (1.0 WTE) to join our friendly and dedicated Biochemistry team at Barking, Havering, and Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust.
The Biochemistry Department, which is currently managed across two hospital laboratories, based at Queen's Hospital Romford and King George Hospital Goodmayes, is run as one department.
The successful candidate will be expected to work at both acute sites Queens Hospital, Romford and King George Hospital, Goodmayes as per service demands; however, the full-time post will initially be based at Queens Hospital. The successful candidate must be committed to quality and improvement with good IT knowledge to enable them to drive the department forward. Candidates must have an in-depth knowledge of the requirements of a modern Biochemistry laboratory service with previous experience of working within the Biochemistry department.
The post holder will be required to undertake tasks within any of the sections of Clinical Biochemistry across both sites and work under the direction of the line manager and training leads. It is essential for the post holder to work in teams or alone to perform complex analytical investigations to provide a fit-for-purpose, patient-focused, cost-effective, timely diagnostic service essential for patient care.
Flexible working hours including weekends and bank holidays will be required within the minimum 37.5 hours per week in accordance with Agenda for Change (AfC) Terms and Conditions.
Where the post holder is employed on the Annex 21 contract, they will be sponsored to attain the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Biochemistry. Advancement to the Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Full Band 6) role is conditional on the verified attainment of the IBMS Specialist Diploma within a designated 2-year time frame.

We operate from two main sites - KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We're campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen's and get rid of corridor care.
Our patients are benefitting from our Women's Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.
These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 88,000 scans a year.
The majority of our 8,000 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. The ideal candidate should be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a BMS and have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio (Clinical Chemistry) or have equivalent proven experience at Band 6 level in Biochemistry.
The Biochemistry department is equipped with Roche Cobas 8100 automated workflow series and Cobas 8000 analysers (c702/e801). The department at KGH is also equipped with Roche Cobas analysers (c702/e801), Roche P612 pre-analytic, Sebia Capillaries Electrophoresis analysers, Phadia 250 analysers for RAST testing, Binding Site Optilite for Serum Free Light Chain assays. The Prenatal Screening Department based at King George Hospital provides a high-quality screening service for chromosomal disorders, such as Down's syndrome, to antenatal patients at the Trust and to a number of antenatal centres in London and the South East.
We operate a 24/7 service on both sites. The Trust is currently exploring an alternative system to accommodate the increasing demand for routine 24/7 testing.
Both hospitals offer a pleasant working environment and are well served by several bus routes and mainline stations nearby.
