Job description

The post holders will be members of the West Region Transport Team and will operate out of our new Avon Valley Facilities Hub based in St. Anne's, Bristol.

These roles will work between Avon Valley and Blackberry Hill to service our inpatient wards on site. You will be instructed by the duty Porter/Transport Supervisor for the Transport Team, together with the Assistant Support Services Manager.

Main duties of the job

Core duties will involve the transportation of inpatient food to site, equipment, removal of confidential waste, NHS logistics, internal and external post, delivery of ward meds and hospital linen /housekeeping supplies and medical gas collection and re-ordering.

The largest vehicle you will be expected to drive will be a 3.5 Tonne Luton type vehicle with tail lift. All applicants must hold C1 license with preferably no more than 6 points.

The list is not exhaustive due to the current changes foreseen on our sites and tasks can change daily due to the demands of the day.

Job responsibilities

Porter/Driver Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To undertake driving duties in accordance with the schedules set down by the Transport Department and any other driving duties as requested by the Transport Officer.
  2. To be smart in appearance being polite to all customers internal or external.
  3. To load and unload vehicles as necessary using sack trucks or other nominated lifting aids as deemed appropriate.
  4. To produce on request a current driving licence with no more than six penalty points.
  5. To drive the vehicle safely and sensibly adhering to the Road Traffic Act and regulations currently in force both on and off site for on-site Porter duties and driver duties off site.
  6. Driver is liable for any prosecution notices for speeding/parking etc that arise from when they are responsible for the vehicle.
  7. Responsible for own allocated vehicle (subject to variation).
  8. Completion of Weekly Vehicle Inspection Sheets (Tyres, Oil, Water, Fuel, Washer bottle, lights etc).
  9. Responsible for the vehicles upkeep internally and externally (ie washing and cleaning).
  10. Report any defects on the vehicle immediately, to the Head Supervisor, Portering Services.
  11. To keep all statutory vehicle and driving records.
  12. To manage, record and organise delivery/collection documentation.
  13. To report any R.T.A. (road traffic accident) to Head Supervisor Portering Services, and complete any necessary documentation in relation to the accident.
  14. To report to the Head Supervisor, Portering Services any issues affecting the schedule of work.
  15. Adherence to the Mobile Phone & No Smoking Policies.
  16. To park the vehicles sensibly. Adhering to any local site parking regulations during collection and delivery, and on return to base.
  17. To ensure the vehicle is returned to the base address at the end of every day. Vehicles are not permitted to be taken home.
  18. To ensure that nothing is left in the vehicles overnight. Vehicles must be emptied at the end of every shift.
  19. Use own judgement as and when necessary when asked to take specific extra items/packages, asking for advice and backup on any decisions that are made, if necessary.
  20. Ensure that all Pharmacy Control Drug Bags are delivered directly to the nominated ward/building and are signed for by a senior member of staff, or specific nominated staff as designated on the schedule.
  21. Responsibility for items left in the vehicle whilst parked and ensure that these are not left open/unlocked at any time whilst not driving.
  22. Ensure that all Specimens are contained within the specified containers and that specialist Pathology supplies are signed for and the books returned to Pathology.
  23. Using own discretion, if staff are unable to sign, in returning the items back to Pathology to be delivered out again the following day, and notifying Pathology of the incident.
