Baby Feeding Specialist
Tower Hamlets
£25.92/hr umbrella rate
Start date: ASAP

Full time: 36/hr a week
Enhanced DBS Check required with Children's & Adults barred list

We will also consider part-time workers and the role is also hybrid.

  1. To provide information, encouragement, and practical assistance to all pregnant women (antenatal clinics) and new mothers (on the postnatal wards at the Royal London Hospital) about the benefits of breastfeeding and relationship building, how to get breastfeeding off to a good start, and the support that will be available after the birth. This will include offering information and support to families choosing to bottle-feed their baby and providing guidance on introducing solid foods.
  2. To deliver a mixture of individual and group interventions with expectant mothers/mothers/partners and babies in multiple locations (in the home, at Family Hub centres, etc.). The postholder will manage the booking system to ensure promotion of the service for universal and targeted support such as (but not limited to): colostrum harvesting workshops, antenatal & postnatal support groups, and targeted support.
  3. To provide interventions with feeding plans where necessary. This may include setting up lactation aids, finger feeding aids, cup/syringe feeding equipment, and setting up breast pumps.
  4. To ensure timely identification, signposting, and referrals are made to specialist services to prevent a delay in support, i.e., refer mothers with complex breastfeeding concerns or when the baby has difficulty feeding due to tongue-tie to the health professionals (Tongue-tie clinic).
  5. To attend GP practices or other agencies to deliver breastfeeding information to medical students and others. To respond to antenatal referrals made by the Gateway team, FNP, Midwives, Paediatrics, and others in community settings.
  6. Responsible for disseminating and communicating relevant policies, procedures, and legislation related to infant feeding across the multidisciplinary team to enhance collaborative working and information exchange.
  7. To utilise a variety of strategies to communicate effectively with women to cater to the specific needs of diverse audiences.
  8. Ensure that the highest standards of confidentiality are maintained, including information (verbally or in writing) and reporting on work undertaken in accordance with the Council's procedure on data protection.
  9. To provide information and support for families who choose to bottle-feed their baby. To provide information and signpost around introducing solid foods to the baby.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Recognised qualification in Breastfeeding Support, e.g., Breastfeeding Network Supporter, NCT Counsellor, NHS training in Breastfeeding.
  • Helpers/Supporters Course Train the Trainer course (willingness to undertake training).
  • Infant Massage Instructor (willingness to undertake training).
  • ECDL/Good ICT skills.
  • Substantial working or volunteering, paid or unpaid, supporting parents with feeding their babies either in a hospital, home, or community centre.
