Main duties of the job

The post is based at Musgrove Park Hospital (MPH).

Rotations occur every 4 months with current rotations being:

  • Orthopaedics -- MPH
  • Stroke service and Neurology -- MPH
  • Care of the elderly - MPH
  • ITU and Respiratory - MPH
  • Surgery, with some exposure to oncology - MPH
  • Musculoskeletal Out-patients -- Dene Barton/Bridgewater Community Hospital
  • JETT (Joint Emergency Therapy Team) -- MPH

The workload will be flexible and, at times, will involve the provision of service in locations other than specified.

To take a full part in the on-call and weekend rota (following an induction programme).

This post will be part of the delivery of the physiotherapy 7 day week service including Bank Holidays and you will be required to participate in the rota system i.e. work 5 days within a 7 day period.

This is a post graduate 'training post' in physiotherapy where the post holder is supervised. Mentoring is available on all aspects of patient care and more senior staff are always available on site The post serves to:

  • Identify, prioritise, assess and treat appropriate patients providing a safe and effective physiotherapy service

  • Plan and prioritise own clinical workload, service using clinical judgement and department guidelines
  • Treat patients as a fully autonomous practitioner with full responsibility for, and legal accountability for, individual clinical decisions and actions
  • Ensure all patients understand the physiotherapy treatment process, and have given valid and informed consent for treatment. Where patients are not able to provide consent for treatment e.g. when suffering from severe cognitive deficits following a stroke or acutely ill say in ITU, the post holder will work within existing legal frameworks, Trust guidelines, and professional codes of conduct
  • Complete a full clinical examination of each patient. The patient examination will integrate information from a range of sources such as the patient, carers, medical/nursing records and the clinical examination
  • Take into account the psychological and social, as well as medical aspects of the patients' history, in order to provide an holistic, patient centred approach, referring to other specialists as necessary
  • Formulate a clinical diagnosis and appropriate patient centred goals, following a complete analysis and interpretation of the clinical examination, with assistance as required from senior staff
  • Select individually tailored physiotherapy interventions / programs of care, from a range of treatment options
  • Carry out manual physiotherapy requiring a high precision of hand eye coordination
  • Assess and evaluate the effects of the chosen physiotherapy treatment during the course of the physiotherapy treatment, altering the treatment approach/techniques as depending on success or failure of original treatment ideas.
  • Teach therapeutic exercises, through verbal explanation, visual demonstration or the physical guiding of the patients movements, to patients and their carers
  • Be able to use a wide variety of physiotherapy techniques e.g. manual therapy, exercise therapy, and respiratory physiotherapy as appropriate for each patient
  • Take a full part in the in-patient discharge planning process, documenting physiotherapy elements of the process on the patients' medical record.
  • Carry out all physiotherapy interventions within the scope of locally and nationally recognised physiotherapy approaches/practice
  • From approximately 3 months post qualification, it is expected that the post holder will work on a rostered basis covering respiratory work during bank holidays and weekends as 'second on'. When relevant competencies have been mastered the post holder will take a full part in the on-call rota

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Degree in Physiotherapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • Member of CSP

Experience

  • Previous NHS experience.
  • Broad range of experience as a student or post registration experience.

Additional Criteria

  • Must have expressed a specific interest in working with the Physiotherapy Team at Musgrove Park Hospital
  • Ability to manage patients as described in the job description
  • Able to demonstrate clinical reasoning and decision making skills.
  • Clarity in explaining ideas with excellent communication skills both verbal and non-verbal
  • Evidence of a good standard of Literacy / English language skills
  • Able to develop a good rapport with patients and staff
  • Ability to accurately summarise treatment session (written and oral).
  • Ability to cope with distressing situations such as imparting unwelcome news with regard to rehabilitation prospects.
  • Have responsibility for planning and providing an effective and efficient physiotherapy service for designated clinical area
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own workload and PTA support staff as they work on a shared patient caseload.
