Automation Engineer – Shape Global Conveyor Solutions
Location: Office-Based (Redcar, UK) with Global Travel
Salary: £35,000 - £44,000 Overtime, Travel Bonuses & Benefits (Realistic Earnings £60-65k)

Our client, a leader in high-end conveyor solutions, is seeking a passionate professional to design, program, and commission control systems worldwide. With 80-90 international travel days annually, this role offers a dynamic mix of office-based programming and hands-on site work, delivering innovative solutions to customers across the globe.

The Role
Reporting to the Head of Controls, you’ll take ownership of control system functionality across one or more projects. From programming PLCs and HMIs in the office to commissioning systems onsite worldwide, you’ll work closely with project managers, SCADA/MES engineers, and customers to ensure seamless delivery and handover.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop PLC, HMI, frequency converter, and auxiliary equipment programs based on company guidelines.
  • Collaborate with Controls Project Managers, providing installation reports and feedback on challenges.
  • Attend internal and customer-facing project meetings to align on objectives and interfaces.
  • Lead onsite commissioning (IO testing to handover) across global locations, with up to 90 travel days annually.
  • Train operators and maintenance crews, ensuring smooth system handovers.
  • Provide as-built documentation (IO lists, layouts) and support the creation of functional descriptions.
  • Contribute to standardization efforts and develop new functionalities when needed.
  • Share knowledge with the Controls Department to foster team growth.

What We’re Looking For

  • Qualifications & Experience:
    • Degree in automation engineering, controls engineering, electrical/electronics engineering, or similar.
    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar automation/PLC programming role.
    • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal and WinCC HMI (Allen Bradley experience a bonus).
  • Skills & Attributes:
    • Self-driven with excellent communication skills and a positive outlook.
    • Comfortable working independently and in teams, sharing knowledge across the organisation.
    • Structured, safety-conscious, and quality-focused approach to work.
    • Hands-on attitude—willing to “get dirty” during commissioning.
    • Fluent in English (written and spoken); German or other languages a plus.
    • Adaptable to a fast-paced, global environment and open to further training.
  • Requirements:
    • Valid driver’s licence.
    • Willingness to travel internationally for 80-90 days per year (up to 120 days if needed).
