Job description

Job Title: Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant

GSL Education are actively recruiting experienced Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant to work at a Special Educational Needs School in York, North Yorkshire starting as soon as possible.

Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant Requirements:

  • Have recent experience supporting children with Autism.
  • Have knowledge of associated needs and behaviours linked to Autism.
  • Be trained in de-escalation, Team Teach, MAPA or NAPPI (this is not essential, but desirable).
  • Have a calm, nurturing and patient persona.
  • Be a flexible education practitioner, who can adapt quickly to situations.
  • Hold an Enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service or be willing to have one processed via GSL Education.

Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Assist the classroom teacher in planning and implementing lessons that accommodate the diverse needs of students with autism.
  • Work closely with students with autism.
  • Help students develop their communication and social skills.
  • Collaborate with the teacher and other professionals to develop and implement behavior management plans.
  • Collect data on student progress and behaviours.
  • Foster positive relationships with students with autism.

As an Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant, it is vital to understand autism and the behaviours it can present. You should have a natural enthusiasm and positive outlook to engage and support young people. Having a good sense of humour and being resilient will prove vital to becoming a successful member of the team.
