Associate / Associate Director

Birmingham

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an ambitious Associate / Associate Director to join a highly respected planning consultancy in Birmingham. This role is ideal for a commercially minded planning professional looking to take on a leadership position and work on a diverse portfolio of complex and high-profile projects.


The Role

As part of a leading planning team, you will play a key role in advising clients across a broad range of sectors, including residential, commercial, retail, industrial, and public sector developments. You will be responsible for shaping and delivering effective planning strategies, managing planning applications and appeals, and overseeing project teams to ensure the successful execution of planning initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead and advise on planning strategies, guiding clients through the planning process.
  2. Undertake and oversee planning appraisals, assessing development potential.
  3. Manage planning applications and appeals, negotiating conditions and obligations.
  4. Lead and coordinate project teams, including architects and external consultants.
  5. Prepare and submit Local Plan representations and policy consultations.
  6. Represent clients in discussions with planning authorities, stakeholders, and at Planning Committees.
  7. Oversee research, analytical tasks, and preparation of client reports.
  8. Assist in the preparation of proofs of evidence for planning inquiries.
  9. Contribute to business development efforts, including preparing tender proposals and generating new opportunities.
  10. Provide mentorship and leadership to junior team members.

About You

We are looking for a driven and ambitious chartered town planner with a strong background in planning consultancy or a relevant public sector role. You will have excellent leadership skills and the ability to build and maintain strong client relationships.


Essential Requirements:

  1. RTPI-accredited degree in Town Planning or a related subject.
  2. MRTPI qualification.
  3. Minimum of 6 years' experience in town planning, ideally with consultancy experience.
  4. Strong commercial awareness and ability to provide strategic planning advice.
  5. Demonstrable expertise in managing complex planning applications and appeals.
  6. Excellent report-writing, analytical, and project management skills.
  7. Strong communication and negotiation abilities.
  8. Ability to lead teams, manage workloads efficiently, and mentor junior colleagues.
