Job description

Do you have an interest in Maritime Safety and Survival equipment and small craft training and are looking for a Flexible part-time role?

If so, this could be the job for you!

Who We Are

As a part of Warsash Maritime School (Southampton Solent University), Safety Training provide commercial education, training and consultancy services to the international maritime and offshore industries. We are based on the Warsash Campus (SO31 9ZL) and train students from cadet level to Chief Engineer/Master (maritime courses) and new joiners to experienced personnel (offshore and renewables courses) in the 4 Safety Training portfolio areas:

  • Fire Fighting
  • Maritime (Survival craft, Sea survival and Fast Rescue Boat)
  • Medical (first aid and medical care)
  • Offshore (including Helicopter Underwater Escape training (HUET))

Our Vacancy

We have a vacancy for an Associate (Flexible, Part Time) person to assist with equipment preparation and maintenance and support the course delivery team during pier head and pool based courses. This is not a Full Time role and the successful candidate would have 1 or 2 days allocated per week on a flexible basis that matches our staffing needs according to the annual course schedule (and to cover full time staff absence).

Our Associate Technician (Maritime & Offshore Safety)

  • Supports Instructional staff during practical activities for STCW and other courses such as; Offshore, lifeboat and Sea Survival (this includes monitoring boat launching/recovery/operation at our pier head and getting in the water at the pool!).
  • Undertakes routine equipment turn-around plus planned and preventive maintenance on maritime and offshore survival equipment.
  • Repairs equipment (e.g. Immersion suits and liferafts) under supervision of full time Technical staff and after full training.
  • Liaises with full time Technical staff and Instructional leads regarding maintenance activities and equipment issues.

The Successful Candidate

You don’t have to be experienced in either training course delivery or the commercial maritime industry (although it certainly helps if you are!) – first and foremost we are looking for a flexible, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team - who has an interest in Maritime Survival Equipment and marine small craft.

As this job role also involves pool courses (Survival and offshore), you must be a confident swimmer and due to the nature of moving between facility sites, the successful applicant will also hold a full UK driving licence and be able to drive vehicles on University business (if required).

Interview Date And Content

  • If shortlisted, interviews will be conducted on 7th May 2025
  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to present a 10min presentation (can be MS PowerPoint but doesn’t have to be) discussing:
Maritime Survival Equipment found on Modern Merchant Vessels.

And be able to answer any questions from the interview panel regarding the presentation.
