An Associate Scientist II position is available within the Biologics Pilot Lab at the AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA. The Pilot Lab group is responsible for supporting cell culture and purification manufacture of GLP tox study material, new technology evaluations, and process scale-up support. The group interacts closely with other cross-functional groups and organizations including PDS&T development teams and manufacturing operations. Independently execute laboratory experiments in close collaboration with supervisor. Demonstrate proficiency in experimental techniques used in day-to-day responsibilities. Collaborate effectively with cross-functional groups to support project goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, development scientists, CMC, and manufacturing personnel.
  • Cultivate CHO cells in suspension at different scales (e.g. shake flasks, wave rockers, bioreactors) in fed-batch and perfusion modes.
  • Prepare cell culture media following recipes.
  • Execute experiments following established experimental procedures and assist in the interpretation of results.
  • Maintain clear, accurate and timely documentation.
  • Demonstrate and drive best practices in environmental health and safety.
  • Demonstrate skill in multiple techniques and appropriately modify protocols, as required, to suit the changing needs of research or development sciences.
  • Effectively communicate scientific data and concepts to internal audiences through reports and presentations.
  • Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, and GMP compliance.
  • Perform routine tasks competently and independently, and generate reliable and consistent results.
  • Place data in proper scientific context by consulting and citing relevant literature.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent education, with typically 3 or more years’ experience or Master’s Degree or equivalent education (no additional experience).
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge to carry out job function.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering research (industry or academia).
  • Proven experience working aseptically in cell culture processes.
  • Exposure to GMP manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with process and analytical equipment: single use bioreactors, wave rockers, biosafety cabinet, centrifuge systems.
  • Ability to multitask and meet timelines in a dynamic environment.
