The project:

Mace has been appointed to a complex, 10 to 15 years, multi-billion-pound programme to redevelop a science campus in the London / South East area. We are the Delivery Partner, carrying out a similar role to CLM for the London 2012 Olympics, delivering design and construction of enabling, infrastructure and building projects in a live environment on a site of national importance maintaining logistics and operations with technical and construction partners.

Our client is looking to transform their campus and how they operate while maintaining a world-class science and research capability, retaining and developing specialist expertise, in a collaborative and health and safety conscious way.

Mace is looking for an Associate Project Director to lead the delivery of a new Science capability with a value of up to £900m. Currently in concept design stage, the Associate Project Director will lead through design development, procurement and into construction delivery ensuring an affordable, licensable and deliverable solution. They will lead and integrate a team across all functions, including the technical partner and main contractor(s).

Working from the site in Weybridge, Surrey and in London, with some flexible working from home as appropriate, candidates will need to have experience of large-scale project delivery, ideally in a highly regulated environment and/or a delivery partner model, managing through design and construction. Experience of delivery of science and high containment solutions is highly desirable.

  • Supporting and sustaining the Mace values, behaviours and culture within the team; with a focus on continually improving the knowledge share and collaboration amongst a geographically dispersed team.
  • Working collaboratively with centre of excellence team leads to ensure cohesive service delivery to the client.
  • Being the first point of escalation and initial point of contact for all PMs regarding project and process issues.
  • General overview of quality, cost and governance functions.
  • Working collaboratively with sector and practice groups to ensure the engagement, wellbeing and development of employees.
  • Providing line management as required. Typically, the senior project managers.
  • Supporting the preparation of fee extensions in line with business targets.
  • Engaging with the client in line with CRM requirements to maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders.

You'll need to have:
  • The capability of managing teams.
  • Demonstrate gravitas and experience when dealing with clients and other key stakeholders.
  • Experience across more than one sector and at senior management grades.
  • Previous experience of innovation, knowledge capture and establishing best practice in service delivery.
  • Knowledge and practice of commercial management.
  • Experience working in a consultancy construction project delivery environment within the public sector and be keen to grow your career and enjoy the opportunities Mace has to offer.
  • Experience in the successful delivery phase of projects and programmes in life sciences and/or pharmaceuticals sector that incorporates the construction of contained environment buildings.
You'll also have:
  • Membership of RICS, CIOB, APM, ICE or equivalent demonstrable professional or personal development.
  • Deep property or infrastructure project management expertise.
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen.
  • Leadership and management experience of large, diverse teams.
  • Experience of managing relationships with key senior stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of how carbon and sustainability considerations will shape the outlook of the projects you are working on.
