An exciting opportunity is available to join Healthcare Improvement Scotland’s Medical & Safety Directorate.

The medical staff working for HIS are critical to ensuring our work is clinically relevant, impactful, and correct. The post holder will play a vital strategic role in ensuring HIS and the doctors working for HIS create the maximum value for the organisation and our doctors. You will support work across all directorates and programmes to ensure our work benefits from high quality medical expertise, networking intelligence and clinical leadership.

You will deputise for the Medical & Safety Director and work closely with the Medical & Safety Director to ensure critical functions of HIS have access to necessary medical leadership and expertise – in particular the regulation of Independent Healthcare and the Death Certification Review Service in Scotland.

You will have responsibility for driving a consistent approach to clinical and care governance within HIS, ensuring that programmes of work across the organisation are underpinned by sound professional advice and ensuring that doctors within the organisation receive professional support. Externally you will work with professional and regulatory bodies to forge strong strategic relationships and support improvements in care across health and care services in Scotland.

You will be fully licenced and registered with the UK General Medical Council, be on the GP or Specialist Register and have significant experience at both a senior management and clinical leadership level within the NHS, with experience of providing leadership cross organisationally and outwith your area of specialist clinical expertise. You will also have strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a track record of delivering sustainable improvements at system level.

The Medical & Safety Directorate was established in 2017 with a focus on supporting doctors and pharmacists’ contribution to improving the quality of health and social care. The directorate provides leadership to support the Medical and Pharmacy community in Scotland to deliver safe, effective and person centred care which is evidence-based.
