Assistant Vessel Maintenance Manager

This position shall assist the Vessel Maintenance Manager with the supervision of all Maintenance Department trades personnel wherever assigned and Vessel personnel assigned to the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility or any location where Steamship Authority vessels may be under repair or overhaul.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist with the supervision of all Maintenance Department and trades personnel, ensuring that all work assignments are completed in a safe, efficient, and timely manner, while adhering to the guidelines set forth in the Authority’s Collective Bargaining Agreements.
2. Assist with determining manpower requirements and planning, scheduling, and prioritizing work assignments to ensure the Authority’s vessels are maintained in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner.
3. Assist with the oversight of payroll records and documentation for Maintenance Department personnel, including daily work reports, vacation, and sick leave utilizing the Time Clocks Plus (TCP) and the Asset Guardian (TAG).
4. Assist with the maintenance, installation, and repair of equipment operated by personnel in the various maintenance shops.
5. Assist with all stockroom and warehouse activities associated with the Falmouth Warehouse and Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility.
6. Assist with onsite Safety Compliance at the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility, the Falmouth Maintenance Shop, and the Hyannis Maintenance Shop, covering all aspects of safety, including personal protective equipment (PPE), job hazard analysis (JHA), and establishing a documented training program for all employees assigned to the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility and maintenance staff assigned to all other SSA locations.
7. Assist with onsite Environmental Compliance at the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility, the Falmouth Maintenance Shop, and the Hyannis Maintenance Shop, ensuring best management practices are performed as outlined in all SSA Environmental programs and plans.
8. Assist Vessel Maintenance Manager in planning and coordinating with other Operations Department management personnel to identify and procure material and equipment necessary for all work assignments prior to each vessel’s annual overhaul and repair period.
9. Meet and review progress of Vessel Overhaul and Repair periods on a weekly basis with vessel senior officers and Operations Department management personnel.
10. Coordinate and work closely with the Vessel Maintenance Manager and other Operations Department managers.
11. May be required to alternate management weekend duty assignments with the Vessel Maintenance Manager, Assistant Port Engineers, and Port Engineers as directed and be available to respond to emergency calls after hours.
12. Perform duties of Vessel Maintenance Manager in his/her absence.
13. May be required to work weekends and/or excess of eight hours per day at times to support the vessels repair schedules.
14. Act as an ambassador and role model for the SQMS with an engaging communication and influencing style able to work with all levels of the business to effect change and positive outcomes.

Required Knowledge:

1. Must possess a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering, equivalent marine experience, or shipyard management experience.
2. A minimum of two years’ sailing experience as First Assistant Engineer (preferred).
3. A minimum of an unlimited USCG First Assistant Engineer’s License (preferred).
4. Computer literate (MS-Word, Excel, Project, and CMMS programs preferred).
5. Knowledge in the repair and maintenance of main propulsion and auxiliary systems on vessels.
6. Experience supervising various trades personnel in the repair and maintenance of vessels.
7. The ability to plan work assignments and evaluate manpower resources to develop production schedules for the overhaul and repair of the Authority’s vessels.
8. Understanding and familiarity with USCG regulations for the repair of commercial vessels.
