Job description

Equans has a new opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor within our Equans Digital business unit that currently delivers critical Building Management System (BMS) Infrastructure upgrades/enhancements across a number of commercial, retail, healthcare, education & government sectors - across the country. In doing so we naturally prime the sites to become 'Smart enabled', meaning we can then introduce further value across sites via our IoT solutions; driving social, economic and environmental benefits to portfolios of sites and more importantly people operating and living within them.

Role Overview

The Assistant Quantity Surveyor will support commercial delivery across several contracts, working closely with the lead Quantity Surveyor and the projects and operational teams within Smart Buildings. This will predominantly be achieved through robust risk and opportunity management along with a focus on compliance, both contractually and procedurally, to ensure that all projects are delivered safely, on time and within budget.

Key Activities

  1. Financial Reporting
    • Support the creation of the project cost variance reports and subsequent reviews of the same by senior members of the projects team.
    • Support the creation of forecasts (final position and cash flow).
    • An understanding of a project budget from which to track and ensure compliance.
  2. Estimating
    • Ability to develop estimates with input from key subject matter experts, including taking site measures where appropriate.
    • Ability to support the creation of key records such as tender documents and bills of quantities.
    • Ability to feed into risk analysis and the identification of value management opportunities during pre-contract stages.
  3. Commercial Negotiation
    • Support and manage the end-to-end payment processes, compliant with the Construction Act, with experience in preparing and reviewing key documents such as applications for payment, payment notices and pay less notices.
    • Competent in the issuing of formal notifications with support of line management.
    • Ability to identify matters which may lead to a dispute and support the management of any such risk(s).
    • Support the development of Procurement Schedules and project plans.
  4. Contract Knowledge
    • A general understanding of a model form contract (i.e. JCT/MF1/NEC etc).
    • Ability to identify the most appropriate form of contract for the given use.
    • Assist in the process to draft a contract, with support from line management.
    • Ability to interpret and enforce contracts.
    • Ability to support the site team on how to adhere to contract terms/mechanisms.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Either be a qualified or working towards becoming a qualified Quantity Surveyor.
  • Solid experience of working as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor.
  • Comfortable with feeding into and advising on commercial strategy.
  • Ability to maintain and apply a good understanding of business objectives in all aspects of the role.
  • Experience of working with industrial installation projects, experience of site working preferable.
  • Ability to liaise with site teams, external parties and contractors to discuss the progress of the project and to address any issues that may arise.
  • Strong & confident communicator able to successfully engage and influence at all levels of the organisation as well as with external contractors and suppliers to organize the phases of project development.
  • Ability to present information in a concise manner, both orally and written.
  • Experience of working in a quality-led environment, with full adherence to systems and procedures, and a focus on continual improvement for all Smart Buildings projects.
  • Ability to identify, monitor, mitigate and manage project and operational risks.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
