Assistant General Manager, National Maritime Museum

The Role

Working in the Commerce and Visitor Experience department and reporting to the General Manager at the National Maritime Museum, the Assistant General Manager ensures their site delivers a high-quality experience for all visitors, managing the site in the General Manager’s absence. Key responsibilities involve supporting the General Manager to lead and manage the Visitor and Sales team, instilling a culture with a strong focus on communication and performance, and overseeing the operational functions of Retail, Admissions and Visitor Experience, ensuring high levels of visitor engagement and delivering income through commercial activities.

As a key point of contact, the role holder will work collaboratively with external stakeholders and the Museum’s internal teams to ensure the smooth running of their site. They will contribute to longer-term planning and development of the National Maritime Museum through participation in strategic and creative meetings.

Qualifications and Skills

The successful candidate will need to have experience of managing a large site and multi-functional team in a service environment to achieve sales targets, with experience of recruiting, training and developing staff and managing staff performance. Effective communication at all levels with proven influencing skills, and experience collaborating with internal and external colleagues are essential for this role, as well as strong organisational and project management skills. The postholder will have good knowledge of Microsoft office and experience working with retail and admission systems, as well as experience of managing site operations including all aspects of Health and Safety.

Working Conditions

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 5 – Middle Management and Professional Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, working 5 days out of 7 (Monday-Sunday, on a rota pattern) between the hours of 9am-5pm, although due to the nature of the work, flexibility may be required.

Salary: £40,500 per annum
