We are seeking an Assistant Archaeological Consultant to join Atkins Heritage team of specialist consultants, supporting delivery of a wide range of heritage services nationally and internationally. You will be based in our Bristol, London, York, Glasgow or Birmingham offices to help deliver our increasing portfolio of archaeological projects across the UK and abroad.

Your purpose:

Job responsibilities would include:

  1. Providing technical advice to a range of clients and internal teams on a diverse range of projects.
  2. Preparing and contributing to EIA screening and environmental statements, heritage statements, desk-based assessments, written schemes of investigation and consent applications.
  3. Assessing heritage constraints to inform and influence design development.
  4. Supporting delivery of medium to large scale projects to ensure they are delivered on time and to budget.
  5. Supporting management of archaeological fieldwork programmes and archaeological subcontractors.
  6. Contributing to defining and developing the scope, programme, and design of heritage works, including delivery of archaeological mitigation and research strategies, and public archaeological outreach programmes.
  7. Consultation and liaison with heritage stakeholders and client project teams as required.
  8. Supporting the production of fee proposals and providing technical inputs on tenders.

You will have a strong background in the historic environment, but with a focus on delivering archaeological fieldwork, with good commercial awareness and knowledge of the UK planning system would be welcomed. You will be expected to thrive in a dynamic and fast paced work environment, enjoy being part of multi-disciplinary teams and have a flexible team working approach. In this role, you would have the opportunity to work on projects of varying scale, for a diverse range of clients and in a variety of national and regional historic contexts. Whether large-scale master planning for development authorities, infrastructure for clients such as Thames Water, Network Rail and National Highways, or smaller bespoke pieces of work for heritage sector clients. Qualifications:

Relevant Masters level, or higher qualification in archaeology or considerable experience in the commercial archaeological sector akin to this level of qualification.

Essential:

  1. Strong background in archaeology and the historic environment, reporting, and project management.
  2. Working knowledge of the planning process (including EIA) and relevant environmental / heritage legislation, policy and guidance.
  3. Knowledge of what environmental impact assessments are and supporting programmes for large scale multi-discipline infrastructure projects.
  4. Knowledge of the consenting process for listed buildings and scheduled monuments.
  5. Robust knowledge of UK archaeology and the historic environment.
  6. Willingness to work across the UK in client and AtkinsRéalis’ offices as fits project requirements; with the opportunity to work internationally.
  7. Full, clean, UK driving licence.
  8. Health and Safety awareness and experience of H&S on archaeological projects.

Desired:

  1. Member of the Institute for Archaeologists at least at Associate level or above of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).
  2. Experience in a commercial consultancy environment.
  3. Technical or specialist subject expert (i.e.: periods, themes, environmental or other field and post excavation specialisms and outreach).
  4. Commercial skills and experience.
  5. Good working knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office packages and GIS.

You will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  1. Strong technical knowledge and skills and Excellent report writing skills.
  2. Good communication skills.
  3. Capable of working under pressure with the ability to meet critical deadlines.
  4. Innovation in approach to archaeological and heritage matters.
  5. Willingness to learn and to mentor others.
