Our Route
Central route is at the heart of Britain's railway. The route covers a major part of the national rail network and is a key commuter line in and out of Birmingham, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford.
We are home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest station outside of London with more than 170,000 passengers using it every day.

Brief Description
This is a crucial role that facilitates the prompt and efficient management of the end-to-end customer experience in relation to Asset Protection services. This position leads a portfolio support function that effectively interfaces with external parties involved in building, maintenance, development, or other activities that may pose risks to the operational railway and its infrastructure. The role ensures compliance with company standards and key performance indicators (KPIs) related to Asset Protection work. This includes managing risk assessments for external and third-party activities, providing guidance through liaison with the Construction Design Management (CDM) client and other responsible parties, and acting as a conduit to broader Network Rail teams and services. The ultimate goal is to deliver excellent customer service across all stakeholder groups.

The Asset Protection Technical Interface Specialist is responsible for coordinating team reporting using established Customer Relationship Management systems, Power BI, and Microsoft platforms. This role involves collaborating with discipline leaders within the Asset Protection team to chair periodic business reviews, which are then communicated at a senior level.

About the role (External)

What will you be doing?

  1. Establish the interface with external parties ensuring that initial risk assessment of outside and third party works are being completed. Provide initial guidance, identifying who the Construction Design Management Client is, and liaising with all duty holders.
  2. Provide safety and technical advice and conditions to outside and third parties to enable them to comply with Network Rail policy and standards.
  3. Interpret and evaluate development intentions of outside and third parties, identifying areas of potential risk and providing direction and advice for the design and safe implementation of the works. Support and liaise with the Network Rail construction staff as required on each project.
  4. Establish outside and third party deliverables. Identify shared goals and opportunities for shared value, whilst seeking to minimise risk.
  5. Provide support to enable handovers to Network Rail interface leads within the Asset Protection team.
  6. Represent Network Rail in establishing interfaces with statutory undertakers seeking to deliver works in close proximity to Network Rail operational infrastructure in accordance with the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA).
  7. Support the Asset Protection team with, and contribute to, the development of process to provide an effective and efficient service in accordance with service level agreements.
  8. Provide support to, and participate in, investigations of incidents involving unplanned or unauthorised outside/third party activities whilst on or about the operational railway and infrastructure.
  9. Facilitate and support Commercial Property in responding to proposed external planning applications which may adversely affect Network Rail.
  10. Manage the response to Commercial Property technical clearance proposals for land use by external parties whilst safeguarding Network Rail's infrastructure and operational requirements.
  11. Lead on team reporting, collating Customer data, business data and commercial data and in collaboration with other Asset Protection discipline leads, report on periodic progress and performance within agreed national Service Level Commitments and route/regional Key Performance Indicators.

In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
  • Previous successful experience of outside and third party engagements
  • Demonstrable understanding of CDM and Health & Safety principles
  • A sound knowledge of technical, safety and performance standards relating to the operational railway and infrastructure protection activities
  • Previous experience of successfully communicating and negotiating effectively at all levels
  • In depth knowledge of property clearance procedures and planning application conditions
  • Able to demonstrate understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
