Job Description Summary

Assembly Technician

Job Description

This Assembly Technician role will involve working days/nights in an Assembly and Test Department. Individuals will be responsible for the assembly & test of Hydraulic Control Units/Propellers where there will be a need to ensure quality, environmental and health & safety standards are always complied with.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Ability to understand and work to engineering technical drawings or Instructions.
  • Kit comes from stores issue with MHS and drawings etc. checks drawings vs MHS. Cross reference LOP (list of Parts) and lay out.
  • Follow MHS to clean parts to MS speck and assemble parts on MHS, ensuring class parts are noted.
  • Assemble kit using torquing equipment to spec standards and drawings.
  • Assembly, then test through PAT - production acceptance test. Assembly is bolted to hydraulic test rig, pressuring the unit, and checking flows. Ensure any Electric circuits, motor testing to ensure motor is producing correct current and output etc.
  • Check to see if all the test equipment is in calibration.
  • Assembly of control units includes processes such as Heli-coil wire inserting, plugging aluminium bodies, torque tightening, wire locking and small component assembly.
  • Surface grinding of shims (spacers) for assembly on some of the units, shim must be machined to fit. Distance measured by micrometre, Vernier to ensure correct distance.
  • Ability to use measuring equipment such as Vernier's and micrometres.
  • Perform final production acceptance tests using mineral oils flow through hydraulic test rigs.
  • 30 units + sub-assemblies in department.
  • The operator works to a specification/written instruction.
  • Responsible for Quality & Environmental, Health & Safety standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all company and statutory procedures, specifications and standards.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • The operator is trained on the job by qualified or time served operators.
  • The operator must be able to read and understand the specification.
  • An operator is only able to work on product that they are signed off to work on through the Dowty Propellers training Department. Each operator when signed off to carry out a process and blade type can carry out that job. They are issued with a unique stamp after training and assessed as competent.
  • Demonstrate good manual dexterity.
  • Literate in the use of Microsoft Office packages and ability to learn internal computer systems.
  • Able to work on own initiative.
  • High level of attention to detail.

Desirable but not essential:

  • Demonstrate experience of working in a flow line production environment and be familiar with materials processing.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A craft apprenticeship in engineering or equivalent considered.
  • The operator is trained on the job by qualified or time served operators.
  • Operators should have a minimum of 4 GCSEs - Grade C/Level 4 (or equivalent) and above including Maths and English, a STEM subject and one other. Operator roles may include complex working documents involving measurements and needs to be able to read and understand the specs.
  • For current operators - accreditation for prior learning (APL), skills and experience in role.
