Aseptics Clinical Trials Lead Technician

We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative, and self-motivated individual to join our expanding pharmacy aseptic services/clinical trials team. The team at Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust comprises approximately 500 pharmacy staff working across five sites and is one of the biggest pharmacy departments in the country.

Principal Technicians work with the Accountable Pharmacist, Chief Technician, and Specialist Pharmacists to ensure the CIVAS service is delivered efficiently, safely, and meets or exceeds relevant quality standards.

You will participate in the planning, organisation, provision, and maintenance of the clinical trials service and be part of the flexible working team in line with current departmental policies and procedures for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, current UK, and EU legislation.

Principal Technicians act as role models and manage their own team of staff and therefore are expected to demonstrate excellent working knowledge of aseptic services, clinical trials, and exhibit exemplary PROUD values.

As a Principal Technician, you must be driven, enthusiastic, flexible, and dependable. You are required to have excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a wider MDT. Ideal candidates should be able to demonstrate leadership skills within a hospital pharmacy setting, as well as effective organisational and communication skills.

Main duties of the job

• Be responsible for the day-to-day management of aseptic dispensing services to maximise efficiency and product quality.
• Implement developments within aseptic services to meet the needs of the patient and work towards the standardisation of aseptic services Trust-wide.
• Develop, train, and motivate staff ensuring they feel valued both for their contribution to the department and as individuals.
• Provide highly specialist technical expertise in the preparation of injectable medicines.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• NVQ3, BTEC in pharmaceutical science or equivalent level.
• Leeds University Aseptic Preparation of Medicines (APDM) short course, or be willing to undertake.
• Current GPhC Registration.
• Evidence of CPD.
• Aseptic BTEC or PTQA certificate or equivalent experience.
• Management Qualification.
• NIHR GCP Training.

Knowledge and skills

• Ability to communicate effectively complex and sensitive information with members of the public and other health care professionals.
• Ability to work both autonomously and effectively as part of a team and with staff at all levels.
• Ability to use own initiative to manage a team to prioritise and organise complex daily tasks, adapting where necessary in response to changing demands.
• Ability to work within narrow margins of error.
• Demonstrate the ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
• Excellent IT skills including understanding of all Microsoft Office programmes.
• Demonstrate the ability to clearly and accurately complete routine and complex documentation and calculations.
• Ability to train/coach/teach tasks to all staff.
• Ability to maintain quality standards as per SOP and work to set procedures.
• Ability to stock control.
• Ability to review protocols and pharmacy manuals and provide technical advice.
• Ability to create worksheets and write dispensing guides for individual clinical trial studies.

Experience

• Knowledge and understanding of GMP, QAAPS, and QA and its application to Aseptic processing.
• Knowledge of GCP and Clinical Trials.
• Extensive post-qualification experience of working in an aseptic/production environment.
• Proven training experience.
• H&S training, knowledge of handling hazardous chemicals according to local SOP & COSHH.
• Knowledge of pharmacy-based computer systems.
• Management training on policies and procedures, equal opportunities, IPR, etc.
• Knowledge of the correct techniques for moving and handling.
• Understanding and use of Chemocare electronic prescribing system.
• SOP writing and change management.
