Historic England has an exciting opportunity for you to join us as an Architect, Chartered Building Surveyor or Chartered Architectural Technologist in our Historic Building Climate Change Adaptation Team. You will have the chance to support the delivery of a programme of technical guidance and training that will improve knowledge, reduce skills gaps and increase the confidence of heritage professionals and decision-makers on all aspects of adapting historic buildings for net zero and climate change resilience.

This is a national role, which is available on a fixed term contract until March 2027 on either a full or part-time basis. We are open to secondments with both public sector and private sector organisations.

The location of this role is National where we offer hybrid working, you will be based in one of our following offices and from home - Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, and Cambridge.

Salary

Circa £40k per annum depending on location and experience.

What you will be doing

You will support the Head of Historic Building Climate Change Adaptation and the wider team in developing Historic England’s approach to climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience in historic buildings, including retrofit. You will use your knowledge and experience to help us enhance and expand our published advice and guidance as well as support a programme of training for priority audiences to ensure that interventions are well-informed and in accordance with best practice.

We need a proactive and collaborative team member who is willing to keep abreast of changes and keen to make an impactful and valued contribution. This is an opportunity to ensure decision-makers have the best advice and guidance available to them on how to adapt our historic building stock for energy efficiency and climate resilience, as well as to exchange skills and knowledge with our team of heritage professionals with expertise in historic building conservation.

Clients will include colleagues in Historic England, Government departments and the wider building conservation sector.

Who we are looking for

• You will have a professional qualification in architecture or building surveying, with current ARB registration or chartered RICS or CIAT membership and accreditation in building conservation, or a commitment to gain conservation accreditation within 12 months of appointment.

• Extensive and wide-ranging practical experience in the repair, alteration and adaptation of traditional buildings, of diagnosing defects in historic buildings and specifying appropriate works.

• Practical experience in approaches to energy efficiency and climate resilience in the built environment and specifying works that meet current regulations and standards.

• Thorough understanding of the mechanisms of deterioration of building materials, options for retrofit and the implications of interventions and material choices.

• Good understanding of factors affecting building performance, including the interactions between the building fabric, services, occupant behaviour, and internal and external environment.

• Strong written communication skills, including the ability to write reports, policy statements, guidance, and articles for a range of audiences.
