We are seeking people who want to contribute to a significant water reform program that aims to respond to the impacts of climate change, support community and industry needs, and improve access to water for First Nations people.

The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency.

The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 50 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

The Position: Are you ready to make a real impact? Our Finance and Business Operations branch, within the Business Services Division, is at the heart of supporting the MDBA through high-quality financial services. Our mission is to provide crucial advice and reporting that enhances our organisational culture, all while supporting our purpose – ‘Rivers, For Generations’.

We are seeking passionate and driven finance and accounting professionals to join us in multiple roles at the APS6 level. If you have experience in any of the below areas, we want to hear from you:

  • Finance Business Partnering

  • Technical Financial Advice

Your key responsibilities in this role are to:

  • Collect and analyse financial information from across the organisation and assist stakeholders resolve issues or challenges while improving their financial acumen.
  • Support business areas in a range of financial management activities including budget management, the production of monthly management reports and financial modelling.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and share financial information and insights to enable delivery of MDBA programs, projects, and business as usual activity.
  • Apply accounting policies and procedures to ensure financial accounting transactions are processed in line with relevant MDBA policies and applicable accounting standards.
  • Provide technical advice to resolve a range of financial management problems, including the interpretation and application of accounting standards.
  • Ensure knowledge of and compliance with legislative, financial, and administrative frameworks, government decision-making processes and regulations.
  • Assist in the preparation for Portfolio Budget Statements and Budget process, including the use of the Central Budget Management System.
  • Process standard month-end journals and prepare key accounting reconciliations.
  • Contribute to the preparation of monthly and annual financial reports.
  • Identify process improvements in the branch and wider organisation.
  • Provide systems support to ensure the successful delivery and maintenance of financial systems, providing professional, prompt, and accurate information and solutions to systems issues.
  • Support the finance team on other related financial administrative duties as required.
