Are you ready to kick-start your career in the dynamic world of metal packaging? Ardagh Metal Packaging UK Ltd is offering an exciting opportunity for five apprentices to join our team in Rugby. We have openings for Engineering Apprentices focusing on Technical, Production, Engineering, and Electrical trades.

About the Apprenticeship:

  1. Location: 1st Year – MGTS Coventry, 2nd – 4th Year – Based at the Plant with weekly day release.
  2. Duration: Four-year program starting in September 2025.
  3. Pathways: Level 3 Engineering.
  4. Qualification: Study for a Level 3 Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship.

Full Job Description:

Main Purpose of the Position: This 4 year fixed term role may lead to the opportunity of completing a HNC along with the Level 3 Diploma in partnership with MGTS.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Adhere to business policies not limited to health and safety, attendance, conduct and quality standards.
  2. Install and maintain high-speed, industrial process equipment for can making. This includes mechanical and electrical elements.
  3. Troubleshoot, adjust, and repair all complex high-speed equipment down to component level.
  4. Perform preventative maintenance on assigned mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  5. Identify inefficiencies and potential process problems and co-ordinate through supervisor to resolve.
  6. Diagnose causes of malfunctions and correct through proper fault finding techniques.
  7. Update schematics, technical drawings and software printouts.
  8. Maintain daily routine checks in all process areas.
  9. Continuous monitoring of equipment conditions.
  10. Carry out planned maintenance and ad hoc maintenance such as on conversion days.
  11. Carry out improvements in the process.
  12. Support trials and new equipment installation and commissioning.
  13. Spares monitoring.
  14. Shift support / cover when required.
  15. Housekeeping.
  16. Log-books and records.
  17. Must follow company policies, procedures, practices, and standards of conduct as outlined in the plant terms and conditions.
  18. Must follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for your area of responsibility.
  19. Must comply with established job safety practices, policies and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives for the safe performance of the work assignment.
  20. Must be aware and complies with hazardous waste management and other environmental management requirements in the workplace by attending scheduled training sessions.

Contacts within Ardagh: All shop floor colleagues and management.

Contacts outside of the Company: MGTS.

Professional Requirements

Qualifications: 5 GCSE’s or equivalent Grades A*-C in Maths, English, Science and two other subjects.

Functional Maths and English.

Languages: English, written and verbal.

Computer Skills/literacy: Competent in all Microsoft packages.

Experience/Attributes:

  1. Candidates must have a good knowledge of engineering practices and be able to set clear priorities even under pressure. Candidates must have strong communication skills and be able to work both as part of a team and to their own initiative and build relationships with external contractors.
  2. Previous Job / Project Experience: Hobbies/ pastimes to include with anything engineering related (e.g. help fix cars, taking things apart and re-assemble).
  3. Positive attitude.
  4. Self-motivated and enthusiastic.
  5. Punctual.

Training provided:

  1. Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence).
  2. Level 2 Award for Foundation Phase Gateway Assessment.
  3. BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge).
  4. Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence).

Location during apprenticeship:

  1. First year of training based at MGTS, Coventry.
  2. Remaining 3 years on site at Ardagh Metal Packaging in Rugby.
  3. Ad hoc off site training as required.
  4. Working shift to support development during apprenticeship.
