Job description
The Anticoagulant Monitoring Service Nurse at Ipswich Hospital is looking for a motivated Registered Nurse to join their small, specialist team in providing a high quality service to their patients. This post is until 21st October 2025 to cover maternity leave and is full time (37.5 hours per week); however, we would consider part time.

You will join a team responsible for the safe dosing of patients on oral vitamin K antagonists (warfarin) and low molecular weight heparins, providing dosage advice to patients, assessment of high or low international normalized ratios (INRs), pre and post-op advice, and education regarding anticoagulation therapy. The team mostly carries out clinical assessments and advice to patients over the phone, as well as some face-to-face appointments.

The service is based within the Haematology Department, monitoring approximately 3,000 patients on oral anticoagulant therapy, dosing about 100-125 INRs each day, with the assistance of a computer dosing system.

The team consists of a Consultant Head of Department, Anticoagulant Nurse Specialists, and Anticoagulant Monitoring Service Nurses.

The service operates Monday – Friday (no weekends/bank holidays), from 09:00 to 18:00. Nurses within the team usually work from 10:00 to 18:00.

A large part of this role will involve assessing patients over the phone, with part of the role holding face-to-face clinics. You will be advising on their dose of warfarin and warfarin reversal. You will also assess patients with high and low INRs and provide them with education regarding their anticoagulation therapy.

You will also provide teaching to other departments, including other nurses and doctors, about anticoagulation and blood clots. Additionally, you will be there to provide advice to the multi-disciplinary team.
