Overview

An Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join the Gastroenterology team in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The APC will work collaboratively with gastroenterologists to provide high-quality care for patients with digestive disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and gastrointestinal cancers. Responsibilities will include conducting patient assessments, diagnosing conditions, ordering and interpreting tests, assisting with procedures, and managing treatment plans.

Responsibilities

Outpatient Responsibilities:

1. Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including medical history, physical examinations, and diagnostic assessments.
2. Diagnose and manage acute and chronic gastrointestinal conditions such as IBD, GERD, celiac disease, and functional bowel disorders.
3. Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging studies, and diagnostic procedures (e.g., stool tests, liver function tests, endoscopy results).
4. Develop and implement treatment plans, including medication management, lifestyle modifications, and dietary recommendations.
5. Educate patients and families on gastrointestinal health, disease management, and preventive care.
6. Assist in outpatient procedures such as capsule endoscopy placement, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube changes, and hemorrhoid banding.
7. Monitor and manage patients on biologic therapies or other advanced treatments for GI conditions.

Inpatient Responsibilities:

1. Provide consultations and follow-up care for hospitalized patients with gastrointestinal conditions, including GI bleeding, pancreatitis, and liver disease.
2. Assist with emergent GI cases, coordinating care with the hospital team and specialists.
3. Perform bedside procedures as appropriate under physician supervision.
4. Collaborate with gastroenterologists, hospitalists, and nursing staff to ensure continuity of care.
5. Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to patient care planning.

Qualifications

• Clinical experience in gastroenterology, internal medicine, or hospital medicine preferred.

• 1–3 years of experience in gastroenterology or a related field (preferred but not required).

Credentials

Essential:

1. Valid and unrestricted license as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the practicing state.
2. Board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP), or Physician Assistant (PA-C).
3. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
4. DEA registration for prescribing medications (if required).

Education

Essential: Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) program.

Other Information

Gastroenterology experience preferred. Must have knowledge of pharmacology principles, surgical procedures and in-depth anatomy; skill in manual dexterity; ability to access clinical situations and initiate appropriate treatment, interpret laboratory data, respond to emergency situations, coordinate work schedules to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency and ability to recognize and document any pathophysiology. Ability to appropriately function in the electronic medical records environment in both Cerner EMR (hospital) and Athena EMR (office practice).
