Job description

Job Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic physiotherapist to join our neurosciences team which is led by a Principal Physiotherapist and includes advanced, senior, junior and assistant physiotherapists. You must have proven paediatric neurological expertise preferably at Band 7 level or as an experienced Band 6, exhibit leadership qualities and have an interest in teaching and self-development.

The post offers the opportunity to work within a tertiary major trauma setting and requires the therapist to effectively assess, treat and manage a varied caseload of children with acute, chronic and complex neurological disorders, whilst working in a variety of settings, including PICU, Wards and Outpatients. Opportunity to work in specialist clinics, including Inherited Metabolic Disorders, Neuromuscular disorders, Neonatal and Epilepsy.

Main Duties of the Job

To share in the organisation, coordination and delivery of the Neurosciences physiotherapy service across the trust, providing specialist expertise in the management of children with neurological conditions.

There will be an expectation that the post holders will show an interest and participate in service development, audit and research. You will need to demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.

Supervision and teaching of rotational Band 6, Band 5 and assistant staff is an essential part of the role. In addition, you will participate in a comprehensive in-service training programme and individual performance review scheme. The successful candidates will also be required to participate in the emergency out of hours respiratory rota.

Job Responsibilities
  1. To organize, co-ordinate and deliver the neurosciences physiotherapy service to in-patients and outpatients, providing specialist expertise in the management of CYP with a broad range of neurological problems.
  2. To undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients, using investigative and analytical skills, and formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning, and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised programme of care.
  3. To continue to develop clinical, teaching, audit and managerial skills by reflecting on own practice, working alongside colleagues, attending appropriate courses and visiting other centres.
  4. The post holder would become a member of specialist networks associated with their speciality and also access continuing professional development/educational opportunities outside of BCH such as regional, national and international neurology/neurorehab meetings.
  5. To be actively involved/lead in clinical audit/research to promote quality standards and evidence-based practice including the awareness/utilisation of current research relevant to the speciality.
  6. To organise, participate and contribute to in-service training programmes, internal and external courses, locally and nationally.
Person Specification

Essential:

  • Diploma or Degree in Physiotherapy (MCSP)
  • HCPC Registration
  • Attended relevant Post Graduate courses/qualifications in relation to Neurosciences
  • Previous experience including paediatrics neurosciences or adult neurology at band 7 level (or equivalent) or experience in Paediatric band 6 level (or equivalent)
  • Evidence of teaching and supervising other staff
  • Evidence of management and leadership skills
  • Previous experience of managing a service/team
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning with decision-making in complex patients
  • Evidence of participation in audit/research projects

Desirable:

  • Experience of training and supervising other professionals in specialist area
  • Relevant leadership/management course
  • Able to respond to changes in working practice
