Advanced Occupational Therapist – Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Are you looking for a new challenge in a fast moving ICU/Respiratory setting? If you are, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 6 or Band 7 Occupational Therapist with relevant experience. You will be a valued member of the integrated OT/PT therapy respiratory team as well as working closely with specialist SLTs and Dietitians.

We are looking for a candidate with excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to facilitate change and development, and a flexible approach. Clinical knowledge and experience working with critical care and respiratory patient cohorts is essential.

The successful candidate will be expected to have excellent teamworking skills, and experience of service development in this area is desirable.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be:

1. Delivering advanced Occupational Therapy intervention for our 21 bedded general Critical Care Unit and 22 bedded respiratory ward.
2. Taking a lead role in advanced cognitive/functional assessment and treatment of patients, who frequently have complex, acute and/or chronic conditions. This may include psychosocial/emotional and cognitive issues.
3. Responsible for participation in service reviews, audits and implementation of evidence-based therapy practice/standards alongside Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, Highly Specialist Speech and Language therapist, and Dietitian.
4. Providing formal supervision to Band 5/6 Occupational therapists and/or therapy assistants/students and informal support to Band 5/6 physiotherapists.

Person Specification

Education & Professional Qualifications

• BSc in Occupational Therapy or equivalent.
• Registration with HCPC.
• Undertaken post graduate study equivalent to MSc level study relevant to the area of practice/in depth post graduate training relevant to area of practice.
• Field work Educator qualification.
• Membership of special interest group.
• Membership of RCOT.

• Significant post-graduate clinical experience in working in relevant clinical area.
• Evidence of extensive post-graduate clinical training.
• Evidence of advanced clinical reasoning skills required to deal with complex conditions and plan OT treatment independently.

• Experience of supervising Junior and non-qualified staff, including participation in personal development reviews.
• Experience of clinical governance initiatives.
• Evidence of understanding the needs of the service users and their families/carers, and to be able to explain the role of the OT to them.
• The post holder will require highly skilled time management and prioritisation skills due to frequent interruptions of job tasks during the working day and balancing of clinical and operational duties, including service development.
• Able to communicate highly complex and sensitive information in written, verbal and presentational form to patients, staff and senior managers within the Trust and across other organisations.
• Highly developed problem-solving skills for highly complex situations, which may include clinical or organisational issues.
