We have a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic, dynamic and suitably qualified OT or PT Senior Hand Therapist to have a pivotal role within the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Outpatient Therapy Service at University College London Hospital (UCLH).

The Hand Therapy team at UCLH has a diverse caseload, working closely with our orthopaedic hand surgeons, to see a wide variety of trauma and elective cases through both hand trauma and post-operative clinics. The team also manages patients referred from our Rheumatology teams, treating patients with arthritis and hypermobility, as well as taking referrals from the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square, which is the UK's largest dedicated neurological and neurosurgical hospital. There are regular Hand therapy Team and MDT meetings, as well as teaching. The Hand therapists are also actively involved in clinical audits and research.

Main duties of the job

With the support of other senior clinicians in Hand therapy you will lead on service evaluation and improvement, audit and operational management of the Hand Therapy Team. You will work to the highest standards to facilitate evidence-informed patient care, playing a key role in supporting and sharing knowledge with other staff members to facilitate and develop hand therapy best practice in line with local and national guidelines.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

• Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy degree/or equivalent
• HPC Registration
• MSc or Masters modules in relevant subject
• Evidence of working towards or successful achievement of Accredited Hand Therapist BAHT
• Significant post qualification experience in Hand Therapy
• Experience of management of complex Hand conditions & surgery
• Highly specialist knowledge & experience of a wide range of approaches to the management of patients with a wide variety of complex hand and wrist problems
• Ability to work as an autonomous practitioner in an area where no support or advice may be available
• Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within Hand Therapy, e.g. post registration training, management competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio.
• Awareness of current evidence pertaining to Hand Therapy and application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills.
• Previous experience of supervision and clinical education of a broad range of clinicians and students.
• Teaching experience to uni and multi-disciplinary groups with evidence of ability to deliver high quality presentations to senior staff.
• Knowledge and understanding of the research process
• Experience at clinical specialist level

Managerial

• Experience of managing a team including supervision and appraisal
• Involvement in/knowledge of service development in design, application and evaluation
• Active participation in Clinical Audit and Policy/Guideline development.
• Experience/knowledge of business planning.

Communication

• Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
