Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at South West London Pathology, St. George's NHS Foundation Trust Hospital for Specialist Biomedical Scientists to join our Cellular Pathology Department with a focus in Histology.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist to work on rotation through our department and to help us continue to deliver exceptional, high-quality integrated care to our patients.

Main duties of the job

We are currently seeking to recruit full-time Band 7 BMS. They should be enthusiastic, dedicated, hard-working individuals and able to demonstrate a flexible approach to work. Appointment will be dependent on experience with the Band 7 post requiring 24 months post Specialist experience. The posts are for 37.5 hours a week.

This post is based at St. George's Hospital; however, the post holder may be required to work at any of the South West London Pathology sites as and when necessary. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and motivated HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientists to join a well-established team within the Histology section of this busy Cellular Pathology department, which has full UKAS Accreditation. The department actively encourages further education and CPD activities. Biomedical scientists within the Histology section will rotate through the laboratory and work with a range of equipment in specialist areas, Digital Pathology, specimen dissection, OSNA, Mohs and Immunohistochemistry. Applicants must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and have post-registration experience in a UKAS or IBMS accredited laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to an extended working service.

Job responsibilities

Scientific and Technical Duties
  1. To be proficient in designated areas of diagnostic work within the department and to provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.
  2. To undertake a range of diagnostic tests and screening procedures through to initial interpretation.
  3. To ensure that test procedures are carried out according to SOPs, assess that other junior staff are competent and participate in their regular review and update.
  4. To undertake technical validation of highly complex results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols.
  5. To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
  6. To carry out corrective action when quality control and assurance procedures indicate loss of performance.
  7. To take part in duties without supervision at a level of autonomy requiring decision making but can refer to more senior or medical staff for support.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential
  • MSc or equivalent specialist experience at Masters level
  • An honours degree or equivalent in a biological science
  • HCPC Registration
  • Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent experience
Desirable
  • Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences
  • Certificate in Quality Management
  • IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice
Knowledge and Experience

  • Proven experience post HCPC registration in the relevant discipline
  • Excellent working knowledge of all aspects of specialist subject in relevant discipline
