Position Summary

We have two positions available to join the Communications Research Team here at Samsung Research UK. Working as a member of the Standards & Spectrum Group, the job's main purpose is to provide expert support to Samsung standards strategies and telecoms technology development as required in the 3GPP Core Networks and Terminals (CT) or alternatively the 3GPP Service and System Aspects (SA) area, with a particular focus on overall 3GPP User Equipment - Core Network protocols or System architecture and services, and contributing to the work of the 3GPP CT1 Working Group, or alternatively 3GPP SA2 Working Group.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Helping lead Samsung standards activities in CT1 or SA2 to increase the profile and technical contribution of Samsung to 3GPP and standards through positive, high-quality, consensus-building contribution to the specifications and work of the 3GPP CT1 or SA2 Working Group.
  • Leading the research in system architecture and services of 5G and 6G and/or User Equipment - Core Network protocols, as related to ongoing and upcoming 3GPP Releases, with focus on input to standards.
  • Finding and breaking into new key technologies. This would include proposals for future product development, and the potential to lead new innovation in standards.
  • Support Samsung Standards activities by drafting technology appropriate patents and working to secure Samsung intellectual property into 3GPP and other relevant standards.
  • Work with Samsung colleagues from other specification working groups and in particular SRUK colleagues in SA2, SA1, CT1, and RAN2, as well as SA2 and CT1 colleagues across various Samsung sites, to maximise synergy between activities and to ensure a cohesive standards strategy across 3GPP.
  • Defend Samsung’s design and implementation choices whenever changes to the current standards specifications are discussed.
  • Work with Samsung engineers when available to identify potential implementation problems/errors in current and previous release specifications or through own investigations, and prepare/agree input to standards meetings, as required to resolve such problems.
  • Proactively identify developments in standards which may cause issues for our implementation teams, jeopardise our preferred deployment scenarios or business use-cases, and/or disrupt our position in the market. Take appropriate action in the standards body, in close collaboration with the relevant business unit and/or implementation team.
  • Developing a close partnership with ETSI/3GPP operators driving work so that Samsung becomes involved earlier in the standardization effort and can more effectively influence the scope and direction towards the standardized solution.
  • Provide in a timely fashion, written reports following attendance of meetings and as appropriate resulting from other activities undertaken.
  • Support wider Samsung standards strategy at meetings as appropriate, including assisting efforts of Samsung’s delegates to CT/SA Plenaries.
  • Provide support/information to SRUK as required on standardisation activities relating to new and future technologies.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, Natural Science, and Mathematics, or any other related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in telecommunications research/standardisation/development, with considerable experience in the relevant working group (3GPP SA2 or 3GPP CT1, and/or related working groups e.g. SA3, CT4) and preferably with experience working as an active participant in standards, preferably as a delegate in SA2 or CT1 (or a related Working Group e.g. SA3, CT4).
  • An appreciation of the standardization processes is highly desirable (especially any experience with 3GPP, NGMN, GSMA). An understanding of the three-stage standardization method described in ITU T Recommendation I.130 would be an advantage.
  • A thorough understanding of the 3GPP mobile telecommunications system, with expert knowledge of SA technologies in systems such as: 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G.
  • Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), or AI/ML, and its application to 3GPP technologies, is appreciated.
  • Evidence of patent filing experience is highly desirable.
  • Evidence of high-quality research publications is appreciated.
  • A good understanding of relationship between standards and implementation, and of implementation methodologies.
  • An effective communicator with evidence of ability to clearly present complex ideas to large groups both internal and external to the company. This includes, but is not limited to, progress reporting and the exchange of technical information. Evidence of being able to present to both technical and non-technical audiences, to both peers and senior management, while getting the key message across.
  • An effective orator and a persuasive debater with an awareness of when and what to push and when to stand back. Specific evidence of good negotiation skills and influence exerted on various decision-making processes is highly desirable.
  • Ability to write well-structured, accurate and complete technical documentation. Experience of contribution to 3GPP specs (e.g. through approved CRs/TPs) is highly desirable.
  • Self motivation and ability to work as part of a team or alone, managing own work, ability to juggle multiple tasks, meet multiple – often tight – deadlines, and setting sensible priorities according to perceived requirements.
  • Ability to learn and implement Samsung corporate business philosophies. Ability to work across time-zones (e.g. with colleagues in other Samsung research centres) and in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Willingness to travel frequently, often long-haul.
