Job description

The Role

Job Purpose

Provide a clinically effective high quality and autonomous lead role in the Addiction Psychology Service within NHS Lanarkshire.

Additional Information Specific to the Role

This post involves providing a leading role within the Addiction Psychology Service across Lanarkshire. This will entail taking responsibility for the management of referrals, including liaison with consultant psychiatrists, addiction psychologists, and other professionals involved in the delivery of treatment and care to patients in Alcohol and Drug Services. The post-holder will be required to have a high level of expertise in relation to addiction and mental health, and be able to provide highly specialist support within APS and the wider psychological and professional community. The post-holder will be required to lead on service development and service evaluation projects. The post-holder will have to represent the Addiction Psychology Service in meetings at various levels, and will have to liaise with staff from different professional backgrounds. The post holder will deputise for the Head of Service as appropriate.

A key part of the role will be to support the implementation of the MAT standards across NHS Lanarkshire. The post holder will take a lead role in relation to workforce development of wider addiction services to embed value-based and trauma-informed practice and have a role in governance of implementing tier 2/3 psychological interventions. The post holder will have a key role in the delivery and further development of a psychosocial training programme to staff within addiction services and provision of ongoing coaching and consultation.

What we'll need you to bring

A key component of this post is the provision of clinical supervision to psychologists and other professionals. All practitioners of psychological therapies must receive regular clinical supervision to ensure ethical and professional practice. Psychological therapy cannot be offered in the absence of clinical supervision.

To enable a qualified Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to supervise they must have a further 1-2 years of post-qualification supervised practice in addition to their doctoral training. They must also complete accredited university-based training in supervision, eligibility for which requires a minimum of 1-2 years post-doctoral experience.

The first 1-2 years post-qualification are also used to consolidate clinical skills and undertake further specialist training as appropriate to the post. This post requires a level of clinical skill and further specialist training which would not be met before this period of post-doctoral experience.

Possession of specialised theoretical and practical knowledge within the Addiction field.

Theoretical and practical knowledge of a wide range of psychological disorders and their treatment, along with extensive knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in the field of Addictions.

Maintenance of Continuing Professional Development in accordance with British Psychological Society guidelines through regular attendance at conferences, specialist training days and specialist treatment modules.

At qualification Clinical/Counselling Psychologists have a minimum of 7 years university education. The entry level qualification for the profession is a doctoral degree.

It would be great if you also have

  • Membership of/affiliation with the British Psychological Society and Division of Clinical or Counselling Psychology
  • Post-qualification training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice (e.g. CBT; CFT; CAT; schema therapy; EMDR)
  • Additional training in specific therapies related to addictive behaviours
  • Experience in the delivery of psychological therapies and therapeutic activities with individuals presenting with complex and comorbid psychological difficulties
  • High level of ability to combine individual, developmental and systemic assessment and intervention frameworks
  • Familiarity with Brief, Solution-focused and Motivational Enhancement therapies
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care, and in taking a lead role in service development, monitoring, and evaluation
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision, of both psychology and other health care professionals
  • Knowledge of a range of theoretical approaches and applied techniques in working with individuals, groups and wider systems and the ability to apply these in practice, with reference to specialist theoretical and practical knowledge within the substance misuse field
  • Knowledge of national and local policies on alcohol and drug services, and relevant legislation.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management
  • The ability to work co-operatively as a member of a multi-professional/multi-agency service and within wider systems. This includes skills of consultation, liaison and negotiation

The working pattern for this role Mon-Fri; 9:00-5:00 pro rata.
