Job description

The Chemistry programme at Bromley Schools' Collegiate is designed to prepare you for teaching Chemistry in secondary schools. This course combines theoretical knowledge with practical teaching experience, helping you build the skills necessary to engage students with the fascinating world of Chemistry. The programme will give you the tools to teach topics ranging from atomic structure and chemical reactions to more advanced areas like organic chemistry and biochemistry.

Throughout the course, you will gain valuable experience through two placements in contrasting schools, allowing you to apply your learning in real teaching environments. You will also be trained in delivering practical science lessons, ensuring that students can safely and effectively engage with experiments and develop their scientific skills.

Key Focus Areas:

The course covers key Chemistry concepts such as chemical reactions, atomic structure, the periodic table, and bonding. You will learn to deliver engaging lessons that integrate theory and practice, using laboratory experiments to help students understand the subject. The course also includes teaching strategies for promoting scientific inquiry, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

You will also focus on making Chemistry relevant to students by linking topics to real-world applications, such as the role of Chemistry in medicine, industry, and the environment.

Mentoring and Support:

During your placements, you will receive mentoring from experienced Chemistry teachers who will provide ongoing feedback and support. This ensures that you are well-equipped to manage classrooms, deliver engaging lessons, and assess student progress.

Bursaries & Scholarships:

For eligible applicants, a £29,000 bursary is available for Chemistry. Additionally, DfE scholarships offer £31,000 for high-calibre candidates. These scholarships also come with added benefits such as subject specialist events, professional development opportunities, and mentoring.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants need a degree (minimum 2:2) in Chemistry or a related subject. You will also need GCSEs in English and Maths (C/4 or above). While prior classroom experience is not required, any experience with young people is helpful.

Fees:

  • QTS only: £8,000
  • QTS with PGCE: £9,200
(These fees are fixed for September 2025)
