Job Number:
Senior Specialist - Catastrophe Modelling (78001810D20230424)
DISCOVER your opportunity
We are looking for a motivated and capable candidate to drive catastrophe analytics and provide modelling support for our reinsurance pricing team. Working alongside actuaries, modellers, and underwriters globally, the role will involve a mix of project work – often presented to senior stakeholders - and renewal pricing for multiple offices. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with interpersonal skills, allowing them to not just deliver modelling results, but also to build relationships and communicate insights that will help shape the portfolio and influence our strategic direction.
What will your essential responsibilities include?
- Pricing complex reinsurance contracts using vendor catastrophe models and our proprietary simulation platform.
- Leading event response analytics, to provide loss estimates following large catastrophes and shape and develop our long-term strategy in this area.
- Leading other catastrophe analytics projects, and translating the results into strategic insights for both internal stakeholders and external clients.
- Coordinating, training, and working with cat modellers across multiple offices, to ensure efficiency, technical excellence, and clear communication throughout the team.
- Developing tools to support and streamline other responsibilities, potentially using various platforms/languages.
- Developing frameworks for pricing and aggregation of man-made perils, including for non-property lines, where appropriate.
- Occasional travel to other offices to build relationships with pricing and underwriting teams.
You will report to the Head of Catastrophe Analytics, Reinsurance.
We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:
- Relevant industry experience - either in reinsurance, or in a closely related discipline from which skills could be transferred.
- Experience working with third party catastrophe models or other sufficiently similar stochastic models.
- Proficiency in Excel and other MS Office applications, and experience of manipulating and querying large datasets in SQL.
- Demonstrable aptitude and appetite for solving new and sometimes unexpected problems.
- High attention to detail, and hence rigorous and accurate work.
- Desire to continuously learn and improve over time.
- A proactive and adaptable approach to organising, planning, and keeping on top of multiple priorities, in order to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and with initiative, seeking out and developing own solutions to problems.
- Ability to simplify complex concepts, and communicate them clearly and confidently to others, both verbally and in writing.
- A proven eye for making things simpler, quicker, and more efficient where possible.
- An openness to challenge (both ways), and the ability to help a group to reach a consensus.
- Strong interpersonal skills, to build productive relationships with individuals on all levels, including remotely across time zones.

We know that sustainability is at the root of a more resilient future. Our 2023-26 Sustainability strategy, called “Roots of resilience”, focuses on protecting natural ecosystems, addressing climate change, and embedding sustainable practices across our operations.
- Valuing nature: How we impact nature affects how nature impacts us. Resilient ecosystems - the foundation of a sustainable planet and society – are essential to our future. We’re committed to protecting and restoring nature – from mangrove forests to the bees in our backyard – by increasing biodiversity awareness and inspiring clients and colleagues to put nature at the heart of their plans.
