What We're Looking For :

We are seeking a Senior Network Engineer to build the networking foundation for a transformative, continent-scale internet infrastructure. This network will support the Share Protocol, a groundbreaking system that blends decentralized technology with wireless connectivity to bring internet access to 600 million unconnected people in Africa. While the blockchain team focuses on protocol development, your role is to design and deploy the robust networking parameters that enable this innovation, keeping the bigger picture in mind to ensure scalability and impact.

Your responsibilities will include :

1. Designing and optimizing routing topologies using eBGP, OSPF, IPv6, and EVPN VXLAN for efficient, resilient data flow.
2. Deploying wireless systems across mmWave, 6 GHz, 5 GHz, and 2.4 GHz bands for both backhaul and access layers.
3. Configuring core infrastructure, including Juniper switches and VPP routers, with automation via Ansible and Python.
4. Ensuring security and reliability through WPA2-Enterprise, IPsec, and self-healing designs.
5. Collaborating with cross-functional teams to align networking with the protocol’s decentralized goals, while mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities :

1. Network Architecture & Design
2. Design, implement, and optimize wireless mesh networks using cutting-edge technologies, including mmWave, 6 GHz, 5 GHz, and 2.4 GHz.
3. Own key Layer 2 / Layer 3 architectural decisions for scalability, routing (eBGP, IPv6, EVPN VXLAN), and real-time performance optimization.
4. Design and optimize wireless network topologies (PtP, PtMP) for coverage, capacity, and cost-efficiency in diverse African environments, leveraging frequency planning and interference mitigation.
5. Core Network & Virtualization
6. Oversee core infrastructure using x86 routers (VPP) and Juniper QFX / EX switches (or similar) to ensure high throughput, low latency, and redundancy.
7. Utilize virtualization platforms (Proxmox, Kubernetes, etc.) to deploy scalable network functions and services in a cloud-native environment.
8. Security & Resilience
9. Ensure robust network reliability through self-healing designs, advanced validation protocols (e.g., Proof of Backhaul, Proof of Location), and redundant ring topologies.
10. Implement and manage WPA2-Enterprise (802.1X) or MPSK for wireless security, as well as IPsec or similar encryption for inter-facility links.
11. Oversee intrusion detection / prevention systems, firewalls, and security best practices to safeguard network operations.
12. Project Management & Field Deployment
13. Lead on-the-ground deployment, including installation, troubleshooting, and integration with partners and external stakeholders.
14. Coordinate with cross-functional teams (procurement, site installers, regulatory bodies) to ensure timely, compliant, and cost-effective rollouts.
15. Document detailed runbooks, network diagrams, and SOPs for long-term maintenance, scaling, and support.
16. Collaboration & Partnership
17. Manage technical relationships with key ecosystem partners: data centers, infrastructure providers, and internet exchanges.
18. Ensure alignment on capacity, performance, and deployment strategies, including BGP peering, upstream transit, and Internet Exchange Point (IXP) integrations.
19. Work closely with internal teams to develop innovative and cost-effective connectivity solutions leveraging blockchain-based reward mechanisms.

Qualifications :

1. Experience & Technical Background
2. 5+ years in network engineering, telecom, or related roles with emphasis on wireless mesh networks, routing, and performance optimization.
3. Hands-on experience deploying or maintaining high-capacity wireless networks (e.g., mmWave, 6 GHz, 5 GHz, 2.4 GHz).
4. Proven expertise in Layer 2 / Layer 3 protocols, specifically eBGP, OSPF, IPv6, and EVPN VXLAN on Juniper, Cisco, or equivalent hardware.
5. Experience in wireless network design, including link budget calculations and optimization across mmWave, 6 GHz, 5 GHz, and 2.4 GHz bands, is highly desirable.
6. Core & Edge Proficiency
7. Familiarity with Juniper QFX / EX series switches, x86-based routers (Vector Packet Processing / VPP), and virtualization platforms (Proxmox, Kubernetes, etc.).
8. Knowledge of network automation (e.g., Ansible, Python, or Junos automation) is a plus.
9. Security & Compliance
10. Experience with 802.1X authentication, MPSK, WPA2-Enterprise, and IPsec encryption for securing wireless and wired links.
11. Understanding of regulatory frameworks (e.g., CAK in Kenya), frequency licensing, and compliance with spectrum allocation and usage guidelines.
12. Field Deployment & Leadership
13. Ability to design and deploy scalable network solutions in real-world environments, including on-the-ground installation and troubleshooting.
14. Strong project management skills, with a track record of leading cross-functional teams and delivering complex rollouts on time and within budget.
