Responsibilities:
- The Senior electrical HVDC Application Engineer is responsible for all aspects of HV/EHV substation design including:
- Defining and managing the HVDC engineering quality plan along with HVDC PEM, ensuring implementation of EMH (Engineering Management Handbook) guidelines, supervising overall technical coordination between different work packages of HVDC projects.
- Working in close collaboration with HVDC Product Delivery Group (PDG) in Stafford, UK to define technically and economically sound HVDC solutions that meet customer technical requirements.
- Accountable for time and quality of project deliverables under HVDC PDG scope.
- Serve as the technological point person for the business for the entire Inquiry to Order (ITO) phase. Provides technical expertise and develops technical solutions with good coordination with PDG and North America region (configuration, performance estimation, economics, etc.) as part of the pre-ITO (requisition) process while interfacing with the commercial team.
- Provide technical support to create subcontractors and power equipment bid packages.
- Responsible for leading and coordinating all technical aspects of AC and DC power substation projects.
- The Sr. HVDC Project Engineer will lead the team providing clear direction, expectations, and reviews to ensure goals are met or exceeded.
- The Sr. Project Engineer will identify key internal & external stakeholders and their needs such as technical information, execution strategy, and drive effective communications to align people for efficient work.
- Accountable for all required technical interfaces to lead HVDC solution Integration and coordinate with discipline project engineers to check information exchange interface sheets are in place and followed.
- Direct the efforts of engineers and designers, coordinate with sourcing and the project team on technical matters to meet project specifications, cost control, and schedule objectives.
- Responsible for HVDC engineering solution compliance with customer technical specifications and interface with internal and external team members such as Principal engineers, Protection and Control Engineers, Civil Structural Engineers, Electrical Physical Designers, Draftsmen, Project Managers, and support organizations.
- Accountable to maintain reference solution defined during ITO and any changes to be part of the change control process.
- Responsible for review of engineering reports to meet customer technical specifications under PDG and region scope.
- Directly responsible for substation outdoor physical design for the general substation arrangement and layout, plan and elevation drawings, and layouts for high voltage bus, cable, high voltage equipment, conduit, cable, and wiring, grounding, and control buildings. Must oversee if not self-perform related studies and calculations as well as development of the bills of material.
- Responsible for the respect of customer technical requirements under HVDC product scope, the Engineer organizes the clause-by-clause analysis to compliance with HVDC product solution.
- Work with the Proposal Manager, Customer, and assigned multi-discipline engineers to provide up to full “Engineer, Procure, & Construct” estimates for conventional utility, industrial, & renewable substations, P&C and equipment programs, Systems & Communications projects, and BOP projects including FACTS, HVDC Segments.
- Writing high voltage equipment specifications and issuance of material purchase request forms, and vendor quotation evaluation for substation equipment including, high voltage cable, and protection and control systems. Can develop scope of work documents with deliverables and schedule for subcontracted engineering work and oversee the successful completion of the work.
- Augment the commercial team for customer presentations of technical capabilities and proposals.
- Accountable for the quality of self and team’s deliverables.
- Provide direction on development of engineering schedules, track, and monitor deliverables to meet “On time Delivery. The Sr. HVDC Project Engineer will Lead Gate and Design Reviews.
- Work on the development of proposals including writing and/or reviewing technical specifications, estimating design man-hours and materials, supporting sourcing for vendor quotations, directing designers and draftsmen on drawing requirements, and the development of clarifications and exceptions as well as technical responses.
- Support in defining and validating the design quality plan for the whole PDG engineering scope.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college (BSEE strongly preferred)
- Ten (10) years minimum experience in HVDC system, FACTS, industrial, renewable, or utility HV & EHV substation design and commissioning.
- Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time, including international, and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies.
- Preferred GE office location is Oakbrook Terrace, IL or La prairie, Montreal office. Other GE offices may be considered.
- Professional Engineering License (within the United States or Canada), and willingness to serve as the responsible engineer.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- The Sr. Application Engineer must be creative and able to lead a team and be accountable for team results in order to deliver a high-quality product on time and under budget.
- Extensive experience of Engineering activities in EPC type environment in T&D, Power Generation or Oil & Gas industry.
- Experience with relevant standards and codes including IEC 62351, IEEE 1588, IEEE 802, IEEE 1402, IEC 62351, IEC 62501, and NERC CIP.
- Knowledge of Independent System Operators’ and utilities’ technical standards including ConEd, PJM, NE, and NYPA.
- Excellent computer skills, including automation tools and software development, and familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD / Microstation) and/or 3D CAD packages with BIM.
- Experience in T&D substation / power delivery systems engineering and projects experience as Project Engineer in utility substation type applications, including substation automation, SCADA, control and relay protection.
- Working knowledge of applicable design calculations such as battery sizing & DC system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, bus, fittings, insulator, and arrector selection, ground grid design, and lightning protection.
- Knowledge of power system studies such a load flows, short circuit calculations, and insulation coordination.
- Knowledge of and experience using IEEE and ANSI standards and codes such as the NEC and NESC. Moreover, the ability to engineer design packages when no clear customer specification is provided.
- Field testing and commissioning experience.
- Demonstrated electrical and mechanical troubleshooting capability.
- Designs solutions with Field Constructability & safety mindset.
- Self-motivated with excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to develop and implement standards and structured programs, including quality.
- Serves as Chief reviewer of technical output, makes judgments on technical conflicts.
- Works on and with developing technology – shows imagination in application of new concepts. Generates advanced value-add technical concepts in HV/EHV substation design.

The salary range for this position is 111,200.00 - 163,100.00 USD Annual. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus.
