Offer Description

This position is to be filled within the History of the Mathematical Sciences team at the Institut de mathématiques de Jussieu-Paris rive gauche (IMJ-PRG, UMR 7586, CNRS, Sorbonne université, Université Paris-Cité). The team's research focuses on the history of science in the modern and contemporary periods, in a broad perspective (including the social and cultural history of astronomy). There is a particular interest in digital humanities methods.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in close collaboration with the team's permanent staff and PhD students, as well as with the permanent and contractual members of the team set up as part of project ARCHIFLAMM. The ARCHIFLAMM project has two main aims: (1) to prepare a digital scientific edition of the correspondence of the astronomer, spiritualist, and writer Camille Flammarion (1842-1925) and of parts of his archives; and (2) to use this previously unpublished corpus to explore the sources of the popularity of a scientist on the fringes of official science, from a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective.

The person recruited should be able to develop original research and produce scientific results related to the ARCHIFLAMM project themes. He / she will assist the project's scientific manager in coordinating the project, which involves an international and interdisciplinary team of 13 partners. Responsibilities include:

  • Organising study days planned as part of the project and publishing the resulting proceedings.
  • Indexing the digital archives generated by the project on the EMAN platform.
  • Organising collaborative indexing work with project members and civil society players.
  • Assisting in the modelling and feeding of databases linked to the project.
  • Communicating the issues and results of the project to a variety of audiences.

This position is to be filled in the History of Mathematical Sciences team under the supervision of David Aubin and the other members of the ARCHIFLAMM project. A workspace and the necessary computer equipment will be provided. Travel will be required between the various partners involved in the project, as well as to the Camille Flammarion archives in Juvisy-sur-Orge and other archive centres. The gross monthly salary is between €2950 and €3500, depending on experience. The person recruited may, if interested, be given teaching duties, which will also be paid as holiday work. The original 12-month contract may be renewed at least once.

Eligibility criteria :

  • This vacancy is specifically aimed at PhD holders in the history of science or in modern cultural history.
  • A very good knowledge of the history of astronomical sciences at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in France and abroad.
  • A good knowledge of the cultural history of France during the same period.
  • A command of written French; a good knowledge of English; knowledge of modern foreign languages (German, Italian, Spanish or other) will be considered an additional asset.
  • Practical experience of archival research and working on digital platforms.
  • Mastery of IT tools, in particular database management and web blog editing.
  • Autonomy, ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and on several sites.

To apply for this position, interested candidates are asked to compile a dossier clearly establishing their qualifications and motivations for the position. The application, to be submitted on the emploi.cnrs.fr website, will consist of the following elements:

  • A covering letter detailing a personal research project.
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of significant publications related to the profile applied for.
