Offer Description

Some modern techniques allow to study in the far field without damaging optical components containing nanostructures, such as white light interferometry. The IPP team has a long experience in the technique of white light interferometric microscopy to analyze small objects. This solution gives access to the three-dimensional measurement of surfaces with nanometric axial sensitivity, but it also performs at the same time hyperspectral imaging of the object. It is possible to obtain reflectance maps of the sample at a very precise wavelength.

The team has several experiments and numerous optical setups allowing to make this type of measurement. The candidate will work on these setups while improving them. He will study different types of samples both experimentally and theoretically, in particular samples that are metamaterials allowing to "filter" light in the spectral domain or a certain polarization.

An example of application is in the field of filtering certain wavelengths for vision protection, which will be studied in collaboration with an industrial partner. It has been shown that filtering certain wavelengths is a therapeutic benefit for certain ophthalmic pathologies. It will also be possible to work on the optical behavior of different cases of nanostructures, for example butterfly wings or laser-made nanostructures giving colored effects. Throughout the thesis project, it will be necessary to adapt the control, acquisition and processing techniques of the original signal, for example by relying on AI on original samples in order to evolve towards a true rapid hyperspectral measurement with a very wide spectral band (UV-Vis-IR).
