The project aims to identify the factors leading to efficient visual foraging, examine how these factors develop during childhood, and apply this knowledge to the field of education. It involves eye-tracking experiments conducted in laboratory and real-world conditions, with adult and child participants. More information on the project can be found at https://anr.fr/Project-ANR-24-CE28-3988.

Responsibilities: Under the supervision of Dr. Jerome Tagu, the postdoctoral researcher will design and conduct visual-foraging experiments with eye-movement recordings in both adult and child participants, collect and analyze data, and actively contribute to the interpretation of the results. Additionally, they will also be expected to conduct literature reviews and monitor technical developments related to the research project, discuss and present their findings to the research team at the University of Bordeaux, as well as at national and international conferences. The postdoctoral researcher will disseminate their work through scientific publications and collaborate closely with other members of the research team. The candidate should demonstrate autonomy in their work.

Required qualifications: A PhD in cognitive psychology (or related field, e.g., cognitive science, neuroscience) is required. Proficiency in French is required given that the project involves working with children. Candidates should also demonstrate strong proficiency in both written and oral English for scientific publication and communication purposes. Candidates must have a strong background in cognitive research and experimental design, strong programming skills (e.g., PsychoPy) and strong analysis skills using statistical software such as R. Experience with visual search, eye movement recordings, and/or running experiments with children are all valuable assets, but candidates showing enthusiasm to learn these methods will also be considered. Moreover, applicants should have good communication and interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills, and be able to show initiative.

Work environment and context: The postdoctoral researcher will join the “Cognition” team, within the Laboratory of Psychology at the University of Bordeaux. The research team is composed of six PIs and four PhD students, working on varied aspects of cognition such as visual attention, language processes, memory, and cognitive control. The lab is located in the heart of the city of Bordeaux with numerous public transport connections (tram, bus, etc.). There is also good access to all necessary equipment (experimental booths, eye-trackers, computers). The postdoctoral researcher is expected to work on-site 5 days per week.

Funding and starting date: The 2-year position is fully funded by an ANR grant awarded to Jerome Tagu. The starting date is flexible, ideally in autumn 2025.
