Environmental Technician

Position: Senior Equipment Operator
Reports To: Director of Operations
Status: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

The Senior Equipment Operator has day-to-day responsibilities in the field. S/he is involved in heavy equipment operation, hauling of heavy equipment, herbicide application, field work, landscape construction, installation of bioengineering materials, equipment maintenance, and safe transportation of equipment.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Safely and effectively operate heavy equipment, including but not limited to: Excavator Operation, Brush Mower Operation, Skid Loader Operation, Front End Loaders and Track Loaders of various sizes and with a vast array of attachments;
• Conduct planting, landscape construction, install bioengineering projects, apply herbicides and conduct other plant management activities;
• Safely transport equipment in conjunction with the production schedule;
• Identify and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed on equipment and perform routine maintenance of heavy equipment, trucks, trailers and other equipment in conjunction with crew leaders and the Director of Production;
• Participate in WED tailgate safety program and preventative maintenance program for company fleet of heavy equipment, trucks and trailers;
• Direct/supervise Environmental Technicians in absence of crew leaders or project managers;
• Comply with all safety rules, regulations and standards as well as all WED policies and procedures;
• Perform other functions, as determined by the Director of Production or other management staff.

Required Licenses:

• Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
• Valid DOT Medical Card (to be acquired with 30 days of hire)
• MA Pesticide Applicator License (to be acquired within 60 days of hire)
• Hoisting and Hydraulics License (to be acquired within 60 days of hire)
• 5+ years’ experience in operating and maintaining heavy equipment, including but not limited to: Excavators, Brush Mowers, Skid Loaders, Front End Loaders and Track Loaders of various sizes and with a vast array of attachments.
• 3+ years’ experience working with power and hand-held landscaping, basic woodworking, and irrigation tools.
• High school diploma or GED certificate
• Ability to participate in daily outdoor strenuous activity in a variety of adverse weather conditions year-round with exposure to occupational hazards such as tick-borne illnesses, biting and stinging insects.
• Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
• Ability to use hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, moving materials, and manipulating things.
• Ability to lift material and/or packages weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
• Ability to receive and comprehend written and spoken directions/instructions.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
• Interpersonal skills and the ability to work respectfully as a team with co-workers.
• Ability to effectively manage one’s time.
• Maintain a well-kept, professional appearance.
• Timely and dependable attendance.
• Workday begins at 6:45am and may require overtime.
• Available to work occasional Saturdays during peak season.
• This position is defined as a Safety-Sensitive Position at WED and would be subject to our random drug and alcohol testing program.
