Principal R&D Scientist on Bots & Behaviors (H / F / NB)
Ubisoft Bordeaux, founded in 2017, works passionately on the biggest AAA titles to deliver the best gaming experiences. The studio is composed of 400 talents from 20 different nationalities, working on licenses such as Assassin's Creed, Beyond Good & Evil 2, and a free-to-play game, BattleCore Arena. Ubisoft Bordeaux is also home to a R&D team, La Forge, which brings together engineers and researchers to work on prototypes for game production, particularly around AI topics.
Job Description :
As Principal R&D Scientist on the topic of bots and behaviors, you will act as an innovation leader and a recognized domain expert, accountable for articulating a research vision and executing a coherent, ambitious, multidisciplinary research portfolio that impacts our core business.
Responsibilities :
- Lead strategic research projects and evaluate novel and emerging computer science technologies, trends, and best practices applicable to the behaviors of bots and NPCs in game creation.
- Explore innovative methods to accelerate production workflows.
- Collaborate extensively with internal and external leaders and specialists.
- Provide strategic advice for designing, implementing, and optimizing production workflows for new generations of games.
Daily Missions :
- Lead and coordinate the research team “bots & behaviors,” including explorations, research directions, and projects.
- Supervise current and future PhD students, contributing to their development.
- Identify and explore relevant academic concepts and lead their transformation into practical game technologies.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver ambitious prototypes and ensure their adoption.
- Influence other departments' roadmaps for optimizing workflows for incoming and future games.
- Share insights with a variety of stakeholders, including upper management.
Qualifications :
Education : PhD in relevant scientific domains
- 10+ years of experience with in-depth expertise related to the position.
- Background in applied or basic research and ability to conduct research using standard methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with techniques such as deep learning and reinforcement learning.
- Contributions to public research (e.g., papers published in venues like NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, SIGGRAPH).
- Experience supervising PhD students is an advantage.
- Demonstrated experience in transforming research into operational success.
Skills and Knowledge :
- Technical expertise in software engineering constraints.

- French language skills are a plus.
