RESEARCHER PROFILE: Postdoc / R2: PhD holders
RESEARCH FIELD(S): Biology, Physics
MAIN SUB RESEARCH FIELD OR DISCIPLINES: Environmental science, Physics
JOB / OFFER DESCRIPTION:
The appointee will participate in the project BIOLUMOPS 2024-2026 (https://anr.fr/Projet-ANR-23-ASTR-0028). This project is about studying marine bioluminescence. The four main tasks of the project are multidisciplinary:
The present post deals with Tasks 2 and 3.
The work proposed here is part of the current challenges of understanding the composition and dynamics of the mesopelagic community (Chatzievangelou et al., 2021; Martin et al., 2020) through an easily detectable and widely distributed activity in marine organisms: bioluminescence. The data will be provided from three surveys planned in March and August 2025 and beginning of 2026. The candidate will analyze biological datasets (from bioluminescence sensors, a UVP, and acoustics) with environmental datasets acquired at the same time (from gliders and onboard). The candidate will mainly be in charge of bioluminescence data analysis and luminous events recorded (shapes of the peaks and spatial and temporal location), in the water column by using and developing signal processing methods. Other datasets will be available through ongoing collaborations within the BIOLUMOPS project (MIO, SHOM, LEMAR), and regular discussions within the BIOLUMOPS team will be favored.
The candidate will potentially participate in two cruises at sea of about two weeks each planned in the Gulf of Lion (Mediterranean Sea) in August 2025 and 2026. The successful candidate will contribute to writing part of the project final report as well as scientific conferences and publications. The work involves cooperation, in particular with the SHOM (Brest) and other postdoc/engineer and PhD hired within the BIOLUMOPS project and within the team.
TYPE OF CONTRACT: TEMPORARY / JOB STATUS: FULL TIME
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 01/06/2025 & TIME: 09:00
ENVISAGED STARTING DATE: 01/06/2025

The gross salary will be 2600 to 3060 (depending on experience), equivalent to a net salary of roughly 2100-2460 €/month.
QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED RESEARCH FIELDS, REQUIRED EDUCATION LEVEL, PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, OTHER RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS:
The post-doctoral candidate will need to master several techniques such as data analysis and statistics, time series analysis, and signal processing methods. Experience with glider data analysis or biological signals (bioluminescence, zooplankton) is welcome. Previous cruise participation is also welcomed. A solid background in biological oceanography and programming/theoretical/numerical tools is a prerequisite. Language: R software or Python. Curiosity, autonomy, and willingness to develop new skills are also necessary.
