Application and Special Instructions

Any candidate shall be:

  1. Of good moral character
  2. A resident of Arizona for one (1) year immediately preceding recommendation for appointment;
  3. Admitted to the practice of law for five (5) years immediately preceding recommendation for appointment.

Each magistrate shall exercise powers and duties as provided by the Charter and Code of the city and the constitution and laws of the state in such cases made and provided.

Applicants should also be familiar with Supreme Court of Arizona Administrative Orders. Persons seeking appointment shall, as part of the appointment application process, furnish a full set of fingerprints to the City.

"Questionnaire For Candidate For Judicial Office" can be obtained online starting Saturday, March 15, 2025 at this link or by emailing clerk-ea@tucsonaz.gov.

The completed questionnaire should be sent to the City Magistrate-Merit Selection Commission, c/o City Clerk’s Office, P. O. Box 27210, Tucson, Arizona, 85726-7210 or dropped off at City Hall, City Clerk’s Office, 255 W. Alameda, 9th Fl., Tucson, Arizona 85701. Questionnaires will not be accepted after 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 14, 2025. The City Magistrate-Merit Selection Commission will make a recommendation to the Mayor and Council. ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The City Magistrate position at the City of Tucson’s City Court Department is responsible for overseeing a wide range of cases involving violations of city ordinances and certain state laws.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Presiding Magistrate. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees hearings, arraignments, trials, and other legal proceedings related to civil and criminal cases within their jurisdiction. Oversees court operations ensuring efficient case management and records of proceedings.
  • Explains legal procedures and defendants' rights to ensure fair treatment and understanding by all parties involved.
  • Ensures the correct application of local ordinances, state statutes, and relevant case law during court proceedings.
  • Evaluates case facts and evidence, imposes appropriate fines, sanctions, and sentences in accordance with the law.
  • Issues search and arrest warrants, subpoenas, summonses, and other court orders as necessary.
  • Adheres to judicial conduct codes, maintaining impartiality and integrity in all cases.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

Mostly office environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Juris Doctorate and
Work Experience: Five (5) years of directly related experience.
