Description du poste

This thesis is part of the European INTERREG project entitled: ASIMUTE: “Intelligent self-consumption and storage for a better use of energy”. The multidisciplinary project involves 20 academic and industrial partners from France, Germany & Switzerland.

The ASIMUTE project:

European states are pushing for a reduction in household energy consumption due to possible supply shortages. The Fessenheim Territory Innovation Feasibility Project has demonstrated the importance of cross-border collaboration to become a reference territory on the European scale for better use of renewable energies.

The overall aim of the ASIMUTE project is to provide intelligent solutions for reducing consumption and optimizing energy storage, by involving end-users throughout the project.

The aim is to ensure a balance between energy demand and the production capacity of renewable energies, considering existing storage facilities.

Thesis objectives:

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electric vehicles. However, as their performance decreases, it's no longer possible to use them for mobility. Several projects have been initiated to recycle these batteries for stationary storage. To date, however, this type of storage is not economically viable.

In this thesis, we propose to update existing surveys on second-life batteries for stationary storage, considering new technological and geopolitical developments. Thanks to partner companies of the ASIMUTE project, non-intrusive measurements will be carried out to qualify batteries and get a better understanding of their state of health (SOH). Particular attention will be given to accurately identifying the state of charge (SOC) using intelligent algorithms. Active balancing of the cells in a battery pack will be proposed to increase the lifetime of the storage.

Real-time simulation tests and case studies will help to determine whether it is more appropriate to reuse end-of-life batteries in stationary storage or to recycle the materials. Best practices based on used battery scenarios from the three countries (France, Germany, and Switzerland) will be proposed for smart self-consumption.

The PhD student will be in contact with the partners of the ASIMUTE project, particularly with the company HAGER, which is experienced in batteries for stationary use.

A "Micro-Grid" demonstrator is available at the Université de Haute-Alsace's IRIMAS Institute. Measurements and practical tests will be possible on this electrical power network.
