THE ROLE & WHY IT EXISTS

Gravitee.io is taking APIs to the next level — we are the premier, open source API platform and we want everyone to know how amazing our software is. To make this happen, we are looking for someone passionate, curious and ambitious. This is where you come in.

We are currently recruiting for a Performance Engineer to define and lead the performance testing strategy within our organisation. You will work closely with Product / Engineering, Architecture, and Platform teams to ensure that the Gravitee platform delivers exceptional performance, reliability, and scalability. By setting benchmarks and providing guidance to both internal teams and customers, you will empower them to optimise their API ecosystems effectively.

Your work will include defining tools and infrastructure for testing, guiding teams on their use, and helping shape the future of the performance engineering at Gravitee. Additionally, you will play a key role in communicating performance metrics, findings, and strategies across the organisation, making performance a visible and valued aspect of our product development. This is a key position for someone who believes deeply in the impact of performance testing and brings proven expertise in the domain.

The ideal candidate for this role will have previous experience working on a fully-remote and globally distributed Engineering team.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

• Defining and driving performance testing strategy across the organisation to ensure our platform is optimised for scalability and reliability.
• Establishing performance benchmarks and infrastructure guidelines to support customers in determining their infrastructure needs for their target API and application usage.
• Leading the development of performance testing frameworks, tools, and infrastructure to enable teams to execute load and stress tests effectively.
• Collaborating with Product / Engineering, Architecture, and Platform teams to integrate performance testing into the development lifecycle.
• Analysing test results, identifying bottlenecks, and working with teams to address performance issues.
• Providing expertise and guidance to internal teams and customers, helping them understand performance implications and best practices.
• Documenting performance standards, test methodologies, and outcomes for both internal and external stakeholders.
• Staying up-to-date with emerging tools, methodologies, and best practices in performance engineering to continuously improve our processes.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

• Proven experience 5 years+ in performance and load testing for scalable software systems.
• Strong understanding of performance testing methodologies, tools, and frameworks (e.g., JMeter, Gatling, or similar).
• Experience in defining performance metrics and capacity planning for large-scale systems.
• Proficiency in analysing performance issues and recommending infrastructure or architectural improvements.
• Experience with cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud platforms AWS, Azure, GCP.
• Knowledge of monitoring and observability tools to assess system performance (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, New Relic).
• Solid development background, with hands-on experience in JVM-based languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Scala) to ensure a strong understanding of system internals and performance optimisation.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate performance concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• A self-starter with the ability to work independently, prioritise effectively, and lead performance initiatives across teams.
