The University of Deusto in the ERC Advanced Grant CoDeFeL project framework invites applications for one (01) open project manager position at the ERC CoDeFeL, Control for Deep and Federated Learning project.

Purpose of the Position

DeustoTech – Deusto Institute of Technology is the technological research center of the University of Deusto, located on the Bilbao campus, whose mission is to promote research, training, and knowledge transfer at the service of society and industry. Within DeustoTech, the Chair of Computational Mathematics is dedicated to advancing research, training, and outreach in various aspects of Applied Mathematics. Our team works actively in the broad area of Applied Mathematics and Machine Learning, developing and applying methods of Mathematical and Computational Mathematics to model, understand, design, and control the dynamics of various phenomena arising in the interface of Mathematics with Engineering, Physics, Environment and Climate Sciences, and Social Sciences.

In particular, CoDeFeL seeks to make a breakthrough that takes the mathematical foundations of Machine Learning beyond their present frontiers, through the systematic development of new ideas and methods inspired by control theory. The project is developed by the “Chair for Dynamics, Control, Machine Learning, and Numerics – Alexander von Humboldt Professorship (FAU DCN-AvH) in cooperation with the University of Deusto in Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain) led by Enrique Zuazua.

DeustoTech is seeking a part-time Project Manager with proven experience in the design and management of international research projects. The successful candidate must work closely with the project's principal researcher and team, as well as DeustoTech's managerial team. The successful candidate will be responsible for internal and external dialogue on project-related issues, ensuring the smooth development and fulfillment of the project as set out in the contract with the European Commission.

Functions:

• Scheduling and controlling the project timeline, tasks, and logistics to meet deadlines and set objectives.
• Coordinating the activities carried out by the working team closely with the project’s PR, including admission and incorporation of team members during the project.
• Monitoring progress: writing progress reports, official reports, bookkeeping, and carrying out administration and managerial tasks.
• Serving as a project interlocutor with other functional areas at the University of Deusto.
• Establishing and maintaining communication channels with other entities.
• Participating and promoting international meetings with the aim of creating connections and synergies within the project.
• Identifying and establishing collaborations with the various actors involved in the innovation system (intersectoriality).
• Identifying, channeling, and enhancing opportunities for innovation as well as coordination with international calls for researchers.
• Ensuring the internal and external visibility of the research and innovation effort of the project (ensuring participation in seminars, R+D+I reports, press releases, etc.).
• Ensuring documentation and protection of innovation outcomes and promoting their use and transfer.
• The PM will coordinate international calls for researchers.

Start immediately at the organization. Part-time incorporation in the first quarter of 2025, with economic conditions commensurate with the experience and knowledge provided by the candidate’s proven experience and skills. Endowment of the contract: Initially limited to up to five (5) years. The remuneration will depend on the candidates' experience and qualifications, which will be evaluated objectively based on the experience.

Qualifications required:

• Bachelor’s degree and/or Master’s degree.
• Training in R+D+I project management and experience in drafting proposals and managing research projects (e.g. FP7, H2020) and funding mechanisms of the European Commission. We are seeking a candidate with at least three years' experience in the management, monitoring, and justification of European projects funded by the European Commission (Horizon 2020, among others). Having previous experience in the management of European research projects (FP7, Horizon 2020, ERC) would be an asset.
• Having experience in the design and drafting of research proposals in the disciplinary field of applied mathematics and/or engineering would be an advantage.
• Negotiation and interpersonal skills to generate a smooth interaction with research and management staff internally and with other local, regional, and international entities; Collaborative and competitive intelligence.
• Languages: proficiency in English and Spanish. A good knowledge of Basque would be an asset.
