About the Role

As a Looker Core & LookML Engineer, you will play a crucial role in developing and scaling executive-level dashboards, delivering data-driven insights to leadership. You will be hands-on in designing, building, and optimizing Looker models and visualizations, while also guiding and mentoring junior data visualization engineers. In addition to Looker (LookML), you will leverage Looker Studio to create dynamic and flexible reporting solutions. Your expertise in LookML, dashboard performance optimization, Looker Studio, and governance best practices will be instrumental in building a trusted and scalable analytics platform.

Key Responsibilities

LookML Development & Data Modeling

• Design, develop, and maintain LookML models, explores, and derived tables to create a scalable and efficient data layer.
• Ensure best practices in LookML architecture, governance, and security to maintain data integrity and performance.
• Optimize query performance by structuring LookML effectively and leveraging BigQuery optimizations.
• Work closely with data engineers to ensure efficient data structuring and proper ingestion into Looker.

Dashboard Development & Data Visualization

• Build executive-level dashboards using both Looker and Looker Studio, ensuring seamless integration with BigQuery and other cloud data sources.
• Develop interactive and self-service reporting experiences, empowering business users to explore and analyze data independently.
• Ensure a seamless user experience, optimizing dashboard performance and query efficiency across both Looker and Looker Studio.
• Maintain consistent branding and storytelling across dashboards for clarity and impact.

Collaboration & Mentorship

• Work closely with stakeholders (business leaders, analysts, engineers) to understand reporting needs and translate them into scalable Looker and Looker Studio solutions.
• Guide and mentor junior data visualization engineers, helping them build strong Looker and Looker Studio expertise.
• Advocate for data governance and best practices, ensuring consistency across teams and domains.
• Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making, educating teams on Looker and Looker Studio capabilities and usage.

Governance & Best Practices

• Implement access controls, row-level security, and permissions to ensure data security and compliance.
• Establish naming conventions, version control, and CI / CD practices for LookML and dashboard development.
• Develop documentation and training materials to scale Looker and Looker Studio adoption across the organization.

Qualifications & Skills

Technical Expertise

• 5+ years of experience in Looker development, with deep expertise in LookML modeling and dashboarding.
• Hands-on experience with Looker Studio, including data blending, calculated fields, and visualization best practices.
• Strong SQL skills, particularly in BigQuery or other cloud-based data warehouses.
• Experience optimizing LookML performance and writing efficient queries to handle large datasets.
• Hands-on experience with Git / GitHub for version control in LookML development.
• Understanding of data modeling concepts (star schema, normalization, dimensional modeling).

Business & Soft Skills

• Strong ability to translate business requirements into data-driven solutions.
• Experience collaborating with executives and business stakeholders to define KPIs and data visualization strategies.
• Proven ability to mentor junior engineers, fostering growth and technical excellence.
• Excellent communication and storytelling skills, able to explain data insights to non-technical audiences.
• Passion for data governance, security, and best practices in enterprise analytics.

Nice to Have

• Experience with CI / CD pipelines for LookML deployment.
• Familiarity with dbt and modern data engineering practices.
• Knowledge of other BI tools (Tableau, Power BI) and their integration with cloud data warehouses.
