JOB POSITION: PhD junior RESEARCHER (I-PI 144-24)
Applications are invited by the University of Alicante President to create a pre-shortlist of candidates in order to cover two open-ended contractual positions of PhD junior researcher to collaborate with the funded line of research “Big Data, Data Space, Artificial Intelligence and Health”. Reference: I-PI 144-24

Pursuant to the provisions of the regulations governing calls for applications of research staff to cover contractual research positions, approved by the Governing Council of 29 June 2021 (BOUA of 30 June 2021) and with instructions of the University of Alicante Offices of the Registrar and the Comptroller, which establish the mandatory use of electronic means for the submission of applications, documentation, payment of fees, communications, notifications and all other procedures of the selection procedures for the temporary contractual administrative and services staff and research staff and other general applicable regulations, the University of Alicante calls for applications to cover two job positions in accordance with the following terms and conditions:
First. Number of vacancies and features of the job vacancies
- Number of job vacancies: two.
- Job position: PhD junior researcher.
- Funded line of research: “Big Data, Data Space, Artificial Intelligence and Health”.
- Working hours: 37.5 hours/week in morning/afternoon sessions.
- Remuneration: €2,300 gross/monthly (plus extra payments in accordance with current regulations).
In accordance with the provisions of the agreement of the Governing Council of 27 January 2022, which approves the University of Alicante 4th Plan for equal opportunities between women and men, it is hereby stated that there is no under-representation of either gender in the category of PhD junior researcher.
Second. First project in which the successful applicant will collaborate
- Name of the project: “European mobility for efficient planning and new business opportunities”.

- Dept. / Institute: University Institute for Computer Research.
- Tasks to be carried out:
- Developing and experimenting with advanced deep learning models to analyse and predict complex mobility patterns. This includes the creation of neural networks for processing spatial and temporal data, such as recurrent or convolutional networks for geospatial analysis, and model optimisation for improved precision and efficiency.
- Exploring novel techniques, like generative models for scenario simulation, and collaborating with the team to apply these models to decision-making and the creation of business opportunities.
Third. Job profile
Preference will be given to those with:
- Experience and training related to the tasks listed in the second section of this call and to:
- Pentaho as a tool for developing business intelligence applications and tools for data transformation and analysis: Pentaho Data Integration (PDI) and Mondrian.
- Programming languages for AI and big data: Scala, Python and SQL.
- Libraries for developing AI algorithms: SparkSQL, NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch.
- Development and implementation of classical machine learning and AI algorithms: k-nearest neighbours (KNN), decision trees, support vector machines (SVM), linear and logistic regression.
- Development of neural network- and deep learning-based algorithms.
- English language.
- Knowledge of Catalan.
- Qualification:
- Official Master's degree in Computer Engineering or in Data Science (Spanish MECES level 3 or EQF level 7), or any other Master's degree with equivalent content.
- PhD in Computer Science (Spanish MECES level 4 or EQF level 8) or any other PhD programme with equivalent content.
Fourth. Requirements for applicants
Compliance with the requirements listed below must always refer to the date of expiry of the deadline for the submission of applications and must be maintained until the date of entering into the contract. Applicants must:
- Hold or be in the process of obtaining a PhD degree certificate (Spanish MECES level 4 or EQF level 8).
- Be a Spanish national or be in one of the situations listed in article 57 of Royal Legislative Decree 5/2015, of 30 October, which approves the revised text of the Act on the Basic Statute of Public Employees (BOE of 31 October). In the case established in point 4 of this article, when entering into the employment contract, the successful applicant must be a legal resident in Spain.
- Be at least 16 years of age and not exceed the maximum compulsory retirement age.
- Possess the physical and mental capacities and aptitudes that are necessary for the performance of the corresponding functions or tasks, for which, prior to the signing of the contract, a medical certificate must be provided certifying the possession of said capacities and aptitudes.
- Not have been dismissed by disciplinary proceedings from the service of any of the Public Administrations or of the constitutional or statutory bodies of the Spanish Autonomous Regions.
